Fashion Magazine 2012 Holiday Guide

Somehow, shopping for the leading ladies in our lives often proves to be the hardest. The challenge for Christmas gift ideas is to be creative, on trend, and meaningful—not the easiest task, but a necessary one. If you’re shopping for your girlfriend, wife, sister or mother, it’s essential to make the gift matter and worth every penny spent.

For Christmas 2012, we’ve dreamt of all things lavish and luxe that can double as a satisfaction to a women’s fashion craving as well as functional piece in her every day life and they are anything but traditional. We know that diamonds have been declared a girl’s best friend, but this year we’re thinking outside of the little blue box and selecting gifts that show creativity. We’ve opted for lush fur pieces that will keep her warm all winter, geometric shaped cuffs that will reinvent the arm party, and even a onsesie that just begs to be taken to a ski resort. These are the pieces that will win a woman’s heart.

Fashion Magazine 2012 Holiday Guide

Holiday shopping for the men and women in your life that have exquisite tastes can be a tricky task. But by taking hints from the Fall 2012 runways, shopping for Christmas luxury gifts can be managed a lot easier. We’ve compiled a list of luxury gift ideas just in time for the holiday season to be upon us.

Geometric prints were one of the biggest trends that came down runways for Fall 2012, so impress a lucky lady in your life by honing your Prada knowledge by choosing a luxury gift that is reminiscent of the brand’s fall collection. Or how about looking to the East for Asian-inspired prints in a shoe from Aldo or beauty travel case from Salvatore Ferragamo—both of which wouldn’t look out of place on the Proenza Schouler Fall 2012 runway.

Christmas luxury gifts can come in all shapes and sizes, but it all depends on the giftee’s personal style and tastes. That being said, a fan of Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2012 collection may not appreciate a D.L. & Co. skull candle; so choose your luxury gifts based on his or her sartorial favorites.

The influence of fashion on the gifts featured in our Christmas luxury gift guide will ease you into checking off the stylish family and friends in your life when doing your shopping this holiday season.

It girl, Alyssa Lau: We profile the Edmonton-based Style Panelist’s sartorial choices and shopping picks for fall

It girl: Alyssa Lau

When it comes to crafting her own personal style, Edmonton’s Alyssa Lau is all about DIY. See her shopping picks »

Alyssa Lau’s one-of-a-kind shredded shorts, studded denim jackets and floral head wreaths are showcased on Ordinary Peoples, the blog she launched in 2011 with her cousin Kurtis. The 20-year-old chemistry student with a flair for all things sartorial also faces down outfit challenges on our Style Panel, which she says is “a great opportunity that has introduced me to so many inspirational bloggers.” This season, she has fallen for the slick leather jackets shown on the runways at Derek Lam, Givenchy and Proenza Schouler. “Leather is incredibly simple and versatile,” she says. “It can also add a rocker-chic aspect to an outfit that no other fabric can.” For this digital-age darling, inspiration and the tools to restock her wardrobe—which includes of-the-moment labels like Acne, Rich & Skinny and T by Alexander Wang—are just a click away. “I look at street style and fashion blogs and do most of my shopping online.”

Or jump to trend: QUILTED LEATHER | OVERSIZED | DOUBLE BREASTED | SHEARLING | LEOPARD PRINT | SHORT PUFFER | WET-LOOK TRENCH

When it comes time to bundle up, our selection of fall’s best outerwear will keep you chic in the chill. We’ve selected seven of their favourite trends from the fall runways and found 40+ coats that will not only keep you warm, but also keep you in style. We saw Celine supersize the cuts on their coats as did Acne, Ralph Lauren created a leopard print throwback to Edie Sedgwick and Gucci made a cape that was so stylin’ that nobody would dare make a superhero joke. Coats have the ability to make an outfit feel completely different. If you toss on a quilted leather jacket you’ll feel like a Balenciaga babe and if you opt for a wet-look trench, you’ll be feeling mod. Coats are adaptable and can make your closet seem brand new even if you’ve worn everything a thousand times. And if you’re feeling like you need a little help pulling together fall looks from head to toe, check out our trends guide.

While the international collections are only half way through there is no doubt that some Spring 2013 trends have been set. London Fashion Week elaborated on some of the trends that we first spotted in New York making spring style seem clearer than ever. Spring 2013 promises bold fashion ready for risk takers. Those who thought the crop top was a phase seem to have been proven wrong. Look for bare bellies and plenty of skin throughout the collections—start those crunches now.

Skin is definitely in, as leather frequents the catwalks for Spring 2013. At Mulberry, leather-on-leather takes the typically non-summer fabric for a ride dropping it right in the middle of its sugary sweet sixties-inspired collection. Meanwhile, defined digital prints continue to develop for Spring 2013 in the hands of their mistress, Mary Katrantzou: vivid images take us on a trip with international banknotes and postage stamps.

The street style in and around the last two days of New York Fashion Week’s Spring 2013 shows were a frenzy of varsity jackets (Opening Ceremony), motorcycle jackets (Acne) see-through bags (from Kenzo to Claire’s) and Asian-inspired printed silks (Proenza Schouler, obv) jealousy-inducing heels (and even a few flats) as shot by our street style photographer Stefania Yarhi. Amidst the madness, Bill Cunningham was playing with some adorable bulldogs. You better bet we caught that too.
