We have a little pre-Valentine’s day, Friday afternoon treat for you: Shots from Aldo’s spring/summer campaign, shot by Terry Richardson and starring Jessica Stam. While the campaign is ostensibly about Aldo’s shoes and accessories (check the cute bow bracelet on the first slide), photo–a big red heart, a giant ice-cream cone, a hot lips phone and a ceramic tiger. Campaign-mate Boyd Holbrook is holding his own little piece of pop culture–a disco ball that references Richardson’s cover of Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds. (Meta!)

How long does it take you to see Raquel Zimmermann in this McQueen ad?

It really did take us a while to spot Zimmermann in this Nick Knight-snapped ad for Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 campaign. First you see the shoe (oh that infamous shoe) and then your eye travels up and right, putting the image together piece by piece until you arrive at a Medusa-like clutch of hair and serpent. A first rate puzzle. (Oh please someone make this a puzzle!) [via Refinery29]

We see where they're coming from: models + explosions = retail gold
Few things leave us at a loss for words, but this Michael Bay-shot action movie Victoria’s Secret commercial really and truly does. But let’s try: Helicopters. Explosions. Heavy metal. Circus. Knife throwing. Mansion filled with wind. Classic cars. Spiral staircase in the desert.
Wow.

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Daisy Lowe are the new faces of Esprit

Mall chain Esprit is upping their advertising ante by hiring Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and Daisy Lowe to be their new faces for spring. Restoin-Roitfeld is fronting their women’s casual line and Lowe is appearing in ads for the EDC by Esprit range alongside her boyfriend, Blondelle singer Will Cameron, who is one of the faces of the EDC men’s line. Esprit says that this is the first time they’ve used celebrity models and the choice of Lowe and Julia, daughter-of-Carine, who may be well known to fashion bloggers and insiders, not exactly a household name, seems pretty clearly to be a move to bring in the fashion cool kids.

Lash blast

Photography by Peter Stigter
I’ve got a great pair. They’re traffic stopping, authentically beautiful and genuinely all mine. Of course, I’m talking about my eyelashes.
Super long and thick, my lashes naturally curl upwards. They define and separate with the application of any mascara, regardless of price, performance or formulation. They consistently attract the attention of friends, colleagues and strangers who all ask: are your eyelashes real? And I never have to wear falsies. My eyelashes are perfect just the way they are.
I can say that. I have crap thin blonde hair, miniscule eyebrows and jiggly thighs–my eyelashes are all that I have.
Yet it still burns me when I see models in television and print ad campaigns, clearly wearing a row of false eyelashes, while promoting the next must-have mascara. It’s not fair. It misrepresents. Read the rest of this entry »
