Vancouver shop notes: Herschel Supply Co.

This spring, power pigment bags continue to light up the scene: Akris did crimson, Alexander Wang showcased blue and Alexander McQueen crushed on orange. Grab a hand-held hue with hometown Herschel Supply Co. (herschelsupply.com). In addition to neutral tones, the bags come in a range of kicky colours, such as burnt orange, moss green, navy, and a red and khaki combo (shown, from $70). With an interior pocket for discreetly hauling around a laptop, the bags carry off function too. Read more »

PFW diary: Fairytales come to life at Akris, Andrew Gn, Azzaro, Celine, and Hermès

Paris Fashion Week is a fairytale, though my battered and blistered feet might indicate otherwise. From the characters to the costumes to the sets, every sunrise here marks the beginning of another magical chapter. So, it wasn’t all that surprising when a bona fide Princess (Charlene Wittstock, Prince Albert of Monaco’s new bride) walked into the Akris show and perched front row. I was seated two rows behind which proved to be an excellent vantage point to study her sizeable diamond stud earrings. My final analysis? They were the Goldilocks of gemstones–not too big, not too small. She is a big fan of Akris, and even had an outfit designed for her wedding day (not THE dress, but a dress) so her ties with this company are firmly rooted. Perhaps this connection explains Akris’s throw to Monaco’s Grand Prix Formula 1 in its spring line-up: racing green, sporty stripes, race car prints. Even the show’s soundtrack included engines revving.

It is always about five days into a fashion week that the trends become crystal clear. And lo and behold, there I was this morning at Akris, the 5th day of the Paris fall 2011 shows and here is what was scribbled in my notebook:

Fashion news: Models apparently petitioning for food at TFW, Richemont buys Net-a-Porter and Matthew Williamson + Blair Waldorf

Everyone’s hungry at Toronto Fashion Week. Models are apparently circulating with a petition to get some well-earned backstage grub. (They’re usually in back-to-back shows with no time for the trek to not-very-nearby eats.) Jeanne Beker tweeted last night: “3 models just came up to me and asked me to sign a petition requesting that the FDCC provide food backstage for models!” Catwalker Addison Gill also took to Twitter to implore us to sign on. [@Jeanne_Beker, @AddisonGill] Update: More on this a Modelresource.ca.

Addison Gill was also giving Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette modelling tips before her turns in the Heart Truth and Attitude shows. [@AddisonGill]

It’s a done deal: Swiss luxury group Richemont, the world’s largest jewelry maker, has bought out the remaining 67% of Net-a- Porter for $343 million. Founder Natalie Massenet will remain executive chairman. [Business Week via Racked] Read more »

Daphne Guinness is the new face of Akris’ spring campaign. The off-the-wall fashionista will officially be tied to the new handbag collection launching in February. Designer Albert Kriemler explained his choice by saying that Daphne “emanates a sense of mystery and aristocracy.” We’re with you on the mystery part. [Fashionista]
