Fashion news: Liam Gallagher to do womenswear, Mark Fast parties with the Queen and John Varvatos’ musical funhouse

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is all set to launch a womenswear line, under his label, Pretty Green, which already has a men’s range. Oh my. [The Cut]

Actually, let’s let Miss J tackle this one with a quote on celeb lines: “My biggest problem is if you’re going to hire a celebrity to design a line and if they don’t know what they are doing, then they need to hire the right person to sketch and oversee the line. It’s an insult to the fashion industry for people who have studied this craft, researched it, traveled the world looking for inspiration compared to someone who just pulls something out of their closet and changes the color.” [PopEater] Read the rest of this entry »

Paris: Alexander McQueen’s final collection

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Fall 2010. Photos via WWD

The last looks Alexander McQueen created before his suicide last month were presented in Paris yesterday. The 16 pieces were “cut on the stand” by McQueen, though the finishing touches were completed by the designer’s team after his death. Gucci Group president and CEO, Robert Polet, told WWD:

“It was a very moving experience to take a deep and serious look at his last collection. It showed Lee’s unique talent to create pieces of beauty that touch many of your senses, leaving one enriched,” Polet said later, after composing himself. Then he added, “Although the sense of loss afterwards, I found overwhelming.”

Lindsay Lohan was a no-show this morning at the Ungaro show in Paris. The details are still hazy but we’re gulping down the juicy gossip: WWD has reported that Lilo does still hold the title of artistic director, while chairman Asim Abdullah reported backstage that she was not involved in the Fall 2010 collection. To be continued. [Telegraph]

We don’t discuss the federal budget too much here on FASHION Diaries. In fact, this is probably a first: The 2010 budget, announced Friday by finance minister Jim Flaherty, includes the elimination of import duties—that had sometimes been up to 14 per cent—on raw materials used to manufacture apparel. Rumours of Gareth Pugh taking on the role of Creative Director at Alexander McQueen can be put to rest. A statement from the designer’s PR said this morning, “Further to speculative reports, Gareth Pugh is not in discussions with Gucci Group about a creative director role at Alexander McQueen.” [Vogue UK] Read the rest of this entry »

Seems that there’s some tension between the Balenciaga house and Carine Roitfeld; the Vogue Paris editor-in-chief was not allowed at the label’s show in Paris, with Rotfield telling WWD, “We’re blacklisted…It’s too bad, it’s a beautiful house and it’s French. I hope that it’s not forever.” She offered the bait, saying that the label no longer advertises in the magazine or lends it clothes, but when asked why, all she had to say was “Ask them.” [Racked] Read the rest of this entry »

Photography by Peter Stigter

News of Alexander McQueen’s death, apparently by his own hand, at the age of 40 has sent a wave of sadness and shock through the fashion world, who were just sitting down to the first collections at New York Fashion Week. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who reportedly rushed out of the BCBG show upon hearing the news, issued this statement:

“We are devastated to learn of the death of Alexander McQueen, one of the greatest talents of his generation. He brought a uniquely British sense of daring and aesthetic fearlessness to the global stage of fashion. In such a short career, Alexander McQueen’s influence was astonishing — from street style, to music culture and the world’s museums. His passing marks an insurmountable loss.” Read the rest of this entry »

Alexander McQueen has committed suicide, according to a report by the Daily Mail. There are no details yet, but the office of the 40-year-old London designer has confirmed his death.

UPDATE: McQueen’s office has released the following statement:

“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home.

“At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.

“Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”
