When it comes to riding a bike, we’re pretty well-versed in combining style with safety. There are many ways to make almost any outfit bike friendly—maxi skirts can be tied up to avoid tire tangles and high heels actually help when kicking off at the curb. But when it comes to hair, few styles can withstand the tight, sweaty confines of a helmet. Let’s just view Canadian boxer Mary Spencer’s defeat yesterday at the gloves of China’s Li Jinzi as another character building experience. Her career might have its share of near-misses (a wildcard invite secured Spencer a place on the Canadian Olympic team and a bye into the quarter-finals almost guaranteed her a bronze medal) but this loss has certainly left Spencer hungrier than ever for competition—she has already stated plans to try again for the gold in 2016. To ease the pressures of training Spencer has been known to visit hairstylist Tony Gereige of Saci Salon in her hometown of Windsor, Ontario, an experience she describes as “my getaway from my everyday boxing in the gym.” According to Gereige himself, “Mary’s hair is as tough as she is.” Read more »

While we’re always game for pictures of Kate doing pretty much anything, it’s the candid action shots that really excite us. Case in point: this morning William, Kate and Harry were playing sports at Bacon’s College in South London to launch a program that encourages young people to become coaches. (How very day-before-the-Olympics appropriate!) Kate wore a checker print white and grey day dress by Hobbs, which is of course now sold out, given its £119 price tag. The full skirt and nipped-in waist didn’t hinder her athletic ability, though: the duchess kicked off her Pied a Terre Imperia wedge heels and went barefoot to referee a judo match. Some people worry about concealing tattoos, but I’m more concerned with covering some post-workout bruises! How can an athletic girl like me still look civilized in a skirt?
For every girl who dives for the Frisbee or takes a tumble off her bike, the following two weeks are often met with a bunch of “what happened?!” inquisitions. But if a wound was a result of a successful soccer match, congratulations are in order—not sympathy! Just like those dark circles under your eyes, bruises are a collection of broken capillaries ruptured when you bump into a surface much harder than your skin. Read more »
