Vancouverites might have to do a quick double-take as they pass by the Salvatore Ferragamo storefront on Robson Street: gone is the black and white façade it’s had for years, and in its place are sleek limestone, ribbons of modern champagne-toned metal and Italian-made Mondrian walnut accents.

In addition to the revamped décor, the legendary Italian label is also offering an opportunity to grab re-imagined versions of some of their most iconic shoe styles. Included in the exclusive Creations line are three Marilyn Monroe styles (“Honey,” “Red” and “Beauty”) that were designed for the blonde bombshell herself, the scalloped gold “Leslie” flat designed for gamine Audrey Hepburn, the famous “Rainbow” platform that was created for Judy Garland and Carmen Miranda’s aurulent mirrored “Miranda” heels.

A countdown of some of the most expensive celebrity auction items ever to go under the hammer

Comments

Celebrity jewels and clothing have become quite the draw at auctions, with dresses and jewels that once belonged to the rich and famous easily fetching millions. Just last week, two hats worn by Kate Middleton hit the auction block, raising more than $11,000 for charity. Daphne Guinness also auctioned off some of her prized fashion pieces in the name of charity, as did Elizabeth Taylor, whose collection of clothing and jewels garnered a record breaking $157 million. The Taylor auction also attracted several celebrity bids—Kim Kardashian purchased three of Liz’s Lorraine Schwartz diamond and jade bangles for $64,000, and Coco Rocha surprised herself when she walked away with Taylor’s yellow and pink Givenchy jumpsuit that she wore to the Met gala this year. We’ve rounded up 10 celebrity fashion picks that fetched a pretty penny at auction, and we think the piece that went for the biggest bank might surprise you.

The cat-eye: We look to icons of different eras for inspiration—plus, tips for painting your own

The cat-eye

The cat-eye is having a moment. Celia Ellenberg takes us through its many versions over the years and finds out how to execute them.

While spring tends to signal the arrival of all beauty things light and bright, the runways told a different story this season as designers embraced a certain graphic cosmetic accoutrement that’s seen an impressive evolution over the past few centuries. Behold, the rebirth of the cat-eye. Black-rimmed upper lash lines were the makeup look of choice at shows such as Ruffian and Dolce & Gabbana, and while the backstage miracle workers made it look easy, mastering the perfect flick on your own can be a different story. We’ve gathered eight eyeliner icons and asked Hourglass Cosmetics’ artistic director Gina Brooke and makeup artist Pati Dubroff to weigh in on whether the liquid pen is truly mightier than the kohl pencil when it comes to crafting the perfect winged liner. Because, according to Brooke, “if you use the right products, getting the look is not an issue.”

TFW diary: Golnaz Ashtiani takes us on a Roman Holiday

Following the ‘60s trend seen on runways this season and earlier last week at Pink Tartan, TFI 2011 winner Golnaz Ashtiani’s showed a Roman Holiday–inspired collection for Spring 2012. White, pastel yellow, purple, and mint green provided a sophisticated colour palette worthy of Audrey Hepburn’s princess in hiding, Anya Smith. Ashtiani kept things modern with colour-blocking blouses and dresses, flowing silk with ruffles, and exaggerated shoulders on dresses and blazers. Intricate pleating also came into play and was layered under a sheer mint dress. Taking my imagination to a far-away place and time, Ashtiani’s collection is certainly worthy of a runway princess.

Ones to watch: Tze Goh moulds a simple statement

Though temporarily overshadowed by Spring’s ode to the thrills and frills of the decadent ’70s, have no fear: Minimalism is still being championed by the likes of Phoebe Philo at Céline, Raf Simons at Jil Sander, as well as a number of young designers such as Central Saint Martins grad Tze Goh. Born in Singapore, he moved to New York to study at Parsons New School for Design and eventually relocated to London, where he is currently based.
