Fashion news: Marni’s animated dolls, questionable publicity at Gaultier, and fashion is as evil as yogurt

Marni’s spring campaign features alien-like animated dolls dressed in Consuelo Castiglioni’s collection. See what we mean? Dolls are huge right now. [Grazia]

Go beyond a bottle of wine with these sweet-smelling hostess gifts

dec09hostessbeauty_lg

I’m not always the most original hostess gift-giver (a nice bottle of ice wine or champagne is almost always my fallback), but this season, I’m going to have these gift sets from Beautymark (beautymark.ca) ready to go instead. The Fresh Hesperides Collection set of body lotion and soap ($40) looks classy and appears more expensive than it is. The Philosophy Holiday Hostess ($26) set, with a shower gel and lotion, smells like cinnamon buns–perfect for the girlfriend who made all five dinner courses, including dessert.

If there’s a bath enthusiast on your list—and one who, like me, believes taking one is no fun without some sort of accoutrement–they’ll appreciate these Mark Self Sanctuary All That Fizz Scented Bath Balls ($14 for three, avon.ca). The candy-like spheres, in lime lavender, lemon sugar and berry cranberry add a playful effervescence to the tub. For a festive touch, they each come wrapped in gold foil, underscoring their confectionary vibe.

The Body Wash, Polish and Balm in Joe Fresh Bath’s Wash & Go with Joe kits ($8, joe.ca) come in fresh and zesty scents–grapefruit, lemon, lime, nectarine, pomegranate or marine–to sluice away the jet fuel, while each 50 ml product’s juicy pop of pink, yellow, green, orange, red or blue is a delightful diversion when unpacking your basic-black travel wardrobe.

We’re in love with Principessa’s Amore scrub

Body scrubs gross me out. The sticky formulations land everywhere except the body parts I’m trying to hit, spewing globs on my shower floor making it slippery and treacherous. But I have a confession: I’m in love with Principessa Amore Afterglow Smoothing Salt Buff ($30, beautymark.ca). Read the rest of this entry »

The buy: Narcissist bath & body products

oct09vannarcissist_lg

Until recently, Vancouver brand Narcissist Design Co. (3659 Main St., Vancouver, 604-877-1555, narcissist.com) was known mostly for creating the infamous Pamela dress in 2004, a jersey number that can be worn in a multitude of ways (and that predated the ubiquitous American Apparel cotton version). Now, the company has launched a bath and body line that includes a body wash ($24), body lotion ($24), and my two favourites, a solid scent compact ($16) and a soy candle ($22). Prints charming

When I get around to it, I’m totally going to wallpaper my dining room. I’m thinking a black and white damask pattern. In the meantime, I can enjoy starting at the beautiful pattern on the bottles of this hand wash ($12) and lotion ($14) by Daub & Bauble (daubandbauble.com).

Coffee bum

Though I love a good cup just as much as the next person, I’m really picky about my coffee. Starbucks is way too bitterly strong, Second Cup is, well, meh and I don’t get why Tim’s is such a hit. And having bad coffee when I’m out for brunch can really make or break the meal. (I’m looking at you, Saving Grace.) I’ve recently stumbled upon a killer brew: Reunion Island’s Organic Ethiopia Sidamo, which I buy from a shop on Queen East called Red Rocket. I can even make it at home and it will taste just as delish—the true test.
