Welcome to the set of our first fashion film, the apocalyptical Welcome End, by director Eva Michon. Starring the Spring 2012 collection by Calla Haynes, the film is the stylish telling of what might be the last day on earth. And what better place to prep for the end of the world than a North Toronto mansion complete with marble fireplace, glass tabletops, and a cavernous book-filled library?
Lewis Mirrett was on set to capture all the action, from Fashion Television’s visit, to model Devon Owens hissing at a porcelain cat.

Escape the chill and head to heavenly Hawaii in resort brights, surfer prints and dive-inspired details. For our very first resort collections shoot, we couldn’t imagine a more fitting setting than the swaying palms and long stretches of white sandy beach on Oahu—especially since Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marni resort were blooming with wild botanical prints and scuba-inspired silhouettes in a tropical paradise palette. Armed with a salt water–filled spray bottle and a boatload of bronzer, our hair and makeup artist Greg Wencel created a sun-kissed, unfussy beach beauty look for model Natalia Bogdanova. A short drive along the coast from Waikiki, we scaled the sloping cliffscape to the crashing waves below to shoot on sparkling black rocks at Lana’i Lookout (or Rifle Range, as the locals call it) and Halona Cove. We spent the day flinging ourselves into the pounding surf to cool off between frames. Our story was completed with a professional surfer as handsome accessory—and on the last day of the trip, we mustered the courage to take a lesson and catch a few waves of our own.

Rad Hourani was recently home in Montreal between jaunts to Paris and New York City to shoot his Spring 2012 look book and video. I popped by his all-white Mile End atelier to find him perched in all black behind two tripods—both focused on the iconic model Kirsten Owen, who drove in from Toronto that morning.
Alternating between Ice Queen and Alien, Owen quietly unravelled before the lens, each flash igniting a fierce thunder in her eyes. Between takes, Hourani and I chatted about his personal inspiration. I discovered his name Rad means “thunder” in Arabic and “clothing” (how serendipitous) in an African language. The designer also added, “Le Rad in Paris is the last bar of the night that is open—a cool bar. It’s not trendy.” If you know anything about Hourani’s avant-garde philosophy, you know it’s not a stretch to make the connection. And, well, I don’t think I have to tell you what “rad” means in English. Here are more snapshots of our conversation.

We’d been dreaming since December of ’70s supermodels roaming through ruins with big hair, big jewels and even bigger attitudes. We couldn’t stop thinking about Diana Ross in the 1975 film Mahogany, or the sophisticated world travellers who strode down the Saint Laurent, Pucci and Ferragamo spring runways. It all led to a transatlantic travel itch, and Turkey proved to be our fashion fantasy come true.
