The daily steal: Chunky grey boots, $80

Without much cause to break out the big snow boots this winter, I’m free to explore other options, footwear wise. Read the rest of this entry »

The daily steal: Rain boots, $30

FMsteal0110rain_lg

Maybe it’s my rebellious spirit, or maybe it’s my inner child. Whatever you call it, it gives me the urge to jump in every puddle I see. The more mature side of me however despairs at ruining my beautiful suede boots. Read the rest of this entry »

Banana Republic brings their footwear collection to Canada

feb09BRshoes3_lg

For those of us who have been logging some serious frequent flyer miles in pursuit of those fabulous fashion collections not available in Canada, like Banana Republic’s footwear, it’s time to start unpacking your bags.  As of this month, select BR stores across Canada have (finally!) made room on the shelves for their coveted footwear collection (from $89).  Think studded platforms, woven flats and soft leather boots in a goes-with-everything-palette of grey, tan, cognac and black. The shoes started trickling into select Toronto (Bloor Street, Toronto Eaton Centre, Sherway Gardens), Calgary (TD Square) and Vancouver (Robson Street) locations this week. Repeat after me, there’s no place like home.

Test driving the Anna Sui FitFlop collab

When Anna Sui’s Shakoha Boot for FitFlop ($205, net-a-porter.com) first landed on my desk, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Boots that promise to tone your muscles are what every lazy Canadian is pining for in the winter, particularly office workers. While I don’t suffer from issues like plantar fascilitis, osteoarthritis and restless leg syndrome—which the FitFlop is reported to relieve–I do work in an office, so I gave them a try. Saskatoon: Footwear fix

I haven’t been letting the winter blues get to me, despite the record-breaking temperatures our frosty little city has been receiving. At least not when Fixation (107 23rd St. E., 306-384-7463, fixationshoes.com) has their doors open.

Halifax: Swiss soles

It happened on the floor of my hotel room in Zermatt, Switzerland. After a full day of swoosh, swooshing in the Alps, and a brief promenade through the ski town, I had schlumped my way back up to my fourth-floor room, dropped to my tired bottom and reached for the zipper of my boots. But it didn’t move. The white Aldo kicks that have been stompin’ me through winter since halfway through my undergrad had finally called it quits.

Wish list: Cozy boots

Gift idea # 3 : A pair of cozy boots

With all the snow that’s been falling, don’t you all have a pair of good boots on your wish list? For the warmest and most solid winter shoes on the market, head to La Canadienne (273 Laurier Ave. W., 514-270-8008, lacanadienne.ca). There you’ll find some pretty funky and elegant styles that’ll get you through the rough weather with ease. We love the shearling snow boots (shown, $450), but for urban dwellers, the equestrians or westerns are just perfect to get from the snowy roads to after work cocktails.

Town and Country in the city

The theme was Town and Country, but the night started off with a good old-fashioned scavenger hunt. Before the party, our team of four headed to the Roots store on Bloor to pick up our entrée to the evening—a striped scarf or pom pom hat. Next it was off to a semi-secret location, the Roots store in Rosedale (surprise!). Those smarty-pants Society girls picked the perfect venue for a little upper-crust-at-the-cottage evening—the shop was all plaids, cozy furniture and piles of birch logs.
