Donna Karan addressed the effect of the Internet and early fashion shows on the industry. She told the crowd at Parsons The New School for Design last week: “When I launched my company, the shows were in April and May, now they’re in February. So my question to this industry, and I say it to myself for my own company: ‘Why am I showing clothes in February?’ I don’t want the consumer to see next week what is going to be in stores in Fall, because it’s confusing.” [My Fashion Life]

André Leon Talley has signed on to film three seasons of America’s Next Top Model. Replacing Miss J on the judging panel, the Vogue editor and caftan fan brings with him 13 custom-made Chado Ralph Rucci robes and tendency toward sublime ridiculousness. [The Cut] Read the rest of this entry »

Our gamer prayers have been answered: A video game based on Project Runway launches March 2. According to WWD, Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum and Michael Kors “don’t carry Uzis, kill monsters or zoom along city streets in souped-up hot rods, ” but that would be amazing! [WWD]

Tony Blair turns from politics to luxury goods. Although not yet confirmed, a source has revealed that Mr. Blair is wrapping up a deal with LVMH to work in an advisory role for the world’s largest luxury goods firm. [Grazia] Read the rest of this entry »

The British Fashion Awards were held in London last night. Christopher Bailey and Burberry were honoured twice: Bailey for British Designer of the Year and his label for Best Designer Brand. During his speech, Bailey announced that he would be showing the Prorsum collection in London again for the fall shows in February. While we were crossing our fingers for the Canadian talent on the nominees list–Mark Fast for emerging ready-to-wear talent and Todd Lynn for Best Menswear Designer–those awards went to Peter Pilotto and Kim Jones for Dunhill, respectively. (Don’t feel too bad for Fast–dressing Julia Restoin-Roitfeld on the red carpet was a win of another kind.) Read the rest of this entry »

Gemma Ward may be ready to retire from her modelling career–her agent announced that she has no plans to continue on the catwalk. After photos of the absentee Australian surfaced on fashion blogs last week, Ward’s physique has come under scrutiny for being “plus-size,” as it has been with every model who starts to look normal. Ali Larter and Dan and Jessi hit up the Bloor Street Burberry opening

The Bloor Street Burberry store opened up officially on Wednesday (though we popped in on the weekend to scope it out). The guest list included MTV’s Dan Levy and Jessi Cruickshank, Jeanne Beker and Heroes‘ Ali Larter, who reportedly beat a retreat soon after being snapped in her head-to-toe Burberry ensemble. Brit DJ and Burberry face Tom Guinness flew in from New York to spin tracks from The Kooks, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. The 9,000-square foot space is home to menswear, the Burberry London and Burberry Brit collections, as well as the full complement of accessories–shoes, bags, sunglasses, checked rainboots. On our weekend visit we made a beeline for the second floor to visit the Prorsum runway collection with its toasty tweeds, luscious suede trench coats and just-frayed-enough waffle-weave dresses.

Dispatch from London: Dancing with the stars at Burberry

In New York, celebrities and other pretty young things are given the ultimate VIP treatment (think private areas at nightclubs and concerts, and multiple security guard escorts before and after fashion shows). As I look around me at the Burberry Prorsum after party, held at Burberry headquarters on Horseferry Road, I realize that is not quite the case in London. To my left? Mary-Kate Olsen. To my right? Emma Watson, the face of Burberry’s fall/winter ad campaign. Yes, we are all bouncing around together to the music of The Kooks, who have arrived to do a live set (the lead singer makes sure to thank “Christopher.” Could that be Christopher Bailey, I wonder?!). Ruffian designs Anthropologie line, Burberry gets digital, and celebrity designers in trouble

Burberry is hopping on the social-media bandwagon with their Burberry Prorsum runway show. It will be simulcast live from London Fashion Week at live.burberry.com at 1:30 p.m. EST today. The brand recently launched Facebook and Twitter accounts, and is set to create a site called “Art of the Trench,” where loyal fans can contribute photos of themselves in their classic nova-check coats. Celebrity clothing lines are being hit hard by the recession. Anna Wintour, and we’re sure many others, is pleased by the economic situation, saying it will weed out the weak. “Every D-level celebrity who thought they could make a quick buck by designing a handbag or whatever is going to disappear,” she said. Stars who don’t seem to have staying power (at least in the design world) include Justin Timberlake, Lauren Conrad and Jennifer Lopez. [WSJ] Read the rest of this entry »
