Night of the TV stars

FASHION’s Rani Sheen guest blogs from the Geminis.

Canada’s TV personalities turned out in their awards-show best on Friday night for the 23rd Annual Gemini Awards in Toronto. The InterContinental’s soaring glass lobby was a grand setting for pre-show cocktails, although the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s basement was a slightly less glamorous venue for the awards.

Andy the great

One of the many perks of my job is chatting with super-talented designers and last week, I got the chance to talk to Montreal-based Andy Thê-Anh at the grand opening of his new boutique (83 Yorkville Ave., 416-921-2639, andytheanh.com) in Toronto’s tony Yorkville.

Halifax: Hey, Canada, we can do it too

For a city you can hide in the palm of your hand, it’s mysteriously possible for its citizens to be right in the thick of citywide event and not have a clue. Halifax’s first dance with fashion week was no exception, passing by without stirring up much more than a light breeze. An event needs deafening buzz to catch this city’s attention and it seems this time around, the vibrations were at just the right pitch.

Halifax: Fashion Week, Round Two

When eight strong-jawed men came lumbering down the runway in body-consuming pieces of pleated and stitched vinyl, bold panels of canary yellows and gunmetal greys, and highlights of clear cut-outs and airy silks—the fruits of designer Akshay Tyagi’s (akshaytyagi.com) labour—I knew this city’s latest go at a fashion week wasn’t in vain.

Montreal: Fashion Week fast approaching

Montreal Fashion Week is almost here.  Taking over the Bonsecours Market in old Montreal (October 13 to 17, montrealfashionweek.ca), the 15th edition of the event is more daring than ever, presenting many young, hip up-and-coming designers as well as the classic, timeless warriors, such as Marie Saint-Pierre, Helmer and many others. Here’s what I’m excited about:

Lights, camera, fashion!

Calgary is a cosmopolitan city, full of affluent audiences, hungry for fashion. But, anyone who lives here knows prices have soared over the past few years. For some, it’s hard enough to justify a vanilla-bean latte, let alone those killer Betsey Johnson pumps. So, what better way to indulge CIFF audiences, than with a heaping spoonful of Canada’s most reasonably-priced fashion line, Joe Fresh Style.

Halifax: Fashion Week, Round One

September has arrived and so has the dawn of the fashion weeks. For Haligonians, this typically means logging on and tuning in to top style sources for runway rundowns from this continent’s fast and fashionable cities.

But now, Halifax is adding to the mix with it’s own incarnation of fashion week—times two. It’s the war of the weeks here on the East Coast and two separate organizers have taken on the task of raising our fashion profile.

Where the boys are

When this year’s Toronto International Film Festival party invites started rolling, we knew we were in for one heck of an opening weekend. And on what could be the busiest two days in the city of Toronto’s history (think: TIFF, Virgin Fest and Canada’s Walk of Fame), this fashionable girl was more than happy to oblige, to the right party, of course.

Star Turner

Many are calling her Canada’s answer to Rihanna, but Kreesha Turner is much, much more than that. The Edmonton-native, turned Toronto-based songstress, just launched her hotly anticipated debut album, Passion (EMI), this past week and this fashionable girl was front and centre at her CD launch party at Revival on College Street in Toronto.
