They said/We said: Diane von Furstenberg furthers her attempts to enforce legal and healthy models walk in the Fall 2012 shows

CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg is not going to let anything slide when it comes to health regulations for models. After last year’s fiasco—an underage 15-year-old (16 being legal age for models), Hailey Clauson, walked in Furstenberg’s Fall 2011 show without her knowledge—the designer is determined to ensure all shows follow the CFDA’s endorsed health guidelines. The guidelines were updated on Thursday.

Furstenberg, scandalized by the incident, pledged, “any model walking in the Diane von Furstenberg runway will have shown I.D. prior to the show,” and is asking other designers to do the same.

To further reinforce this regulation and promote awareness, the CFDA sent a guide to help recognize eating disorders. The lengthy guidelines suggest the industry do things like “Encourage models who may have an eating disorder to seek professional help in order to continue modeling,” and “Develop workshops for the industry on the nature of eating disorders” Extensive list? Yes, but definitely necessary.

DVF has been blazing this trail for a while now, but we fear there’s more work to be done. In the meantime, let’s hope other designers follow in her footsteps for the Fall 2012 shows.

Patrick Robinson is out at Gap… but why?

Comments

Photography by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for NYC & Company

We’re barely halfway into 2011 and the fashion world has already seen our fair share of industry shake-ups: the Galliano scandal, Carine Roitfeld’s exit at Vogue Paris, Christophe Decarnin’s mysterious mental illness/ousting at Balmain, and now Patrick Robinson has been booted from the Gap.

While most of the recent switch ups seem to make sense⎯Galliano’s anti-Semitic outburst couldn’t very well go un-reprehended and Decarnin’s health issues were clearly in need of medical attention⎯we found ourselves puzzled upon hearing the news that Robinson had been presented with a pink slip due to lackluster sales in the first quarter of this year. We’ve seen many a powerhouse figure reinstate retail dinosaurs (Bonnie Brooks at The Bay , Jenna Lyons at J.Crew), so why not Robinson at the Gap?

Celeb vote: Who was best dressed at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards?

Comments

Last night, menswear designer Billy Reid was awarded the US$300,000 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize and the fashion firmament was there–from Kim Kardashian to Karl Lagerfeld and every socialite, starlet, stylist and designer that exists in that rather considerable chasm between. We picked some of our favourite looks of the night and threw in a few outliers because, frankly, the young starlet uniform of a short dress and booties is starting to get a little boring. Who do you think was best dressed? (If you need a better view, there’s a full gallery after the jump.)

CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists Joseph Altuzarra and Eddie Borgo

The 10 finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund have been announced. The first place winner of the fund, which was created to give up-and-coming young designers that financial oomph they need run their businesses, receives US$200,000 and the runner up gets a (very) consoling US$50,000. On the list of finalists are the likes of jewellery designer Eddie Borgo, Joseph Altuzarra, who’s worked with Marc Jacobs and at Givenchy with Riccardo Tisci, and Prabal Gurung, who dressed Michelle Obama for the White House Correspondents’ dinner. Past winners include Sophie Théallet and Alexander Wang–and see how well that went for him.

Fashion news: McQueen vs Cadbury, American Apparel’s beautiful people club and Gaga watches baseball wearing lingerie

The house of Alexander McQueen is considering suing Cadbury for using an image of their 2006 hologram of Kate Moss in their ads. The question is, why would Kate Moss make us want to buy chocolate? [Racked]

First, he won Swarovski Accessories Designer of the Year at the CFDA‘s, and now Alexander Wang‘s got himself a new New York apartment. The Tribeca one bedroom was previously owned by former New York Times Style editor Holly Brubach, and cost him a modest $2 million. All in all, a good week for Alex. [New York Observer] Read more »
