It’s been a couple of months since the last big red carpet event and let’s face it: what is fashion without the red carpet? Since May is just around the corner, this only means the biggest fashion event of the year, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in New York. This year’s exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will feature around designs for both men and women focusing on the evolution of punk’s influence in the world of fashion since the birth of its movement in the 1970s to its present day.

With punk theme as the focus, who better than to have punk’s latest muse, actress Rooney Mara, and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as this year’s co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour and Moda Operandi’s Lauren Santo Domingo? Not usually associated with punk, Beyonce was named Honourary Chair of the event as if her show-stopping Givenchy dress at last year’s MET Gala was not enough of a reason to be given this honour.

It’s official, Spring 2013 fashion month is over. And after receiving a daily dose of street style photos and runway updates, it would be silly for us to ignore the trends that we saw day after day (after day, after day). It’s hard not to fall victim to sensory overload, but thankfully our street style photographer, Stefania Yarhi, made it easy for us to pick and choose which trends we know we’ll be seeing all spring long. With hundreds of photos from Paris, Milan, London, New York, and Toronto at our disposal, we just couldn’t ignore the countless graphic tops (a day without a Balenciaga sci-fi sweater sighting was a total shocker), exposed bellies, suits, and mixed prints—so we didn’t because we’re positive they will be huge come Spring 2013. We’ve selected 10 of the biggest fashion trends from the streets and the runways and put them together in one place, so gets to clickin’. The leaves may just be starting to fall, but it’s never too early to plan for spring, right? (RIGHT!)

View by trend: 1. CARTOON GRAPHICS | 2. BARE MIDRIFF | 3. FILING SUIT | 4. MIXED PRINTS | 5. MONOCHROMATIC | 6. OUT THERE ACCESSORIES | 7. PEEK A BOO | 8. SEEING RED | 9. SIXTIES | 10. STRUCTURE

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013 Street Style: We spot Chloë Sevigny, Emma Stone, Marc Jacobs and Dianna Agron on the last day of shows

See the final batch of street style photos from fashion month!

And that’s a wrap! Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013 has come to a close. Please excuse us while we sob into our keyboards. Stefania Yarhi, our street style photographer, worked her magic outside of the shows and finished off fashion month by photographing a surprising set of street stylers, but it’s an exciting batch of photos nonetheless.

Fashion month ended with shows from Louis Vuitton, Ellie Saab, and Miu Miu. A collection from Miuccia Prada is pretty alluring, so alluring that young Hollywood starlets hopped on a plane and left Los Angeles just to sit in the front row. Sassy Glee star, Dianna Agron kicked it old school with mod spider lashes and a clean pulled back pony and Emma Stone showed up with an extremely bold lip she accessorized with a man carrying an umbrella for her. Is it wrong to say we liked this umbrella-holder’s “OMG” hoodie a lot?

Chloë Sevigny was also in attendance, which makes a lot of sense considering she’s been the face of Miu Miu a couple times, and she was looking like the young starlets super cool older sister in a mixed print short suit.

Front row seating at the Spring 2013 Fashion Week collections has been an exciting who’s-who jumble of predictable favourites and amazing surprises this year.

Miu Miu’s Spring 2013 collection was presented today in Paris, with Glee’s Dianna Agron front and centre of the It girl mélage that came to check out Miuccia’s latest creations. Looking quite mod, she wore a ‘60s look of a turquoise dress, blue heels and purple tights, all by Miu Miu. Dianna Agron was seen with actress Amanda Seyfried who was wearing a Prada suit, Emma Stone and Felicity Jones both in Miu Miu and fashion week fixture and designer herself Chloë Sevigny. The girls looked like they were about star in the brand’s latest campaign, although Sevigny can already boast about that.

Chloë Sevigny fronts Miu Miu campaign for the second time. Which is your favourite?

Comments

Left: Chloë Sevigny for Miu Miu’s Fall 2012 campaign, Right: Chloë Sevigny for Miu Miu’s Spring 1996 campaign

The wait was worth it: after 16 years, Chloë Sevigny is reprising her role as Miu Miu’s girl-du-jour by gracing their latest fall campaign, shot by the Mert and Marcus team. True to Miu Miu’s Fall 2012 ready-to-wear collection, which was ‘70s-esque pantsuit-heavy, the Hit and Miss actress is decked out in a pair of printed pants, a checkered tie and platform heels.

Miu Miu said the campaign was intended to be “a gallery of portraits with a seductive, provocative attitude,” with hints of contrasts throughout. Sevigny’s sleekly mannish ensemble and slicked back coif definitely strike a masculine-feminine contrast with her exaggerated aqua eyeshadow and graceful pose. And that teacup is the perfect prop — we love how it gives the actress and all-around style icon an off-kilter femininity.

While we loved the stripped-down campaign of the then-22-year-old Sevigny shot by Juergen Teller in 1996, we think this more sophisticated look shows how Sevigny (who was already the epitome of girl-crush material in the ‘90s) has somehow evolved even more into her offbeat, inimitable style.

Quotable: It’s recently come to our attention that Chloë Sevigny hates going to fashion shows

Comments

While she’s certainly one of our favourite people to spot front row, The Sev (as in Chloë Sevigny, who is held in such high regard by fangirls like us that she doesn’t even need to be referenced by her full name) doesn’t even like going. In an interview with BBC Radio, she said:

They said/We said: A new study has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35

Gone are the days of teenage style icons (okay, maybe not the eternally best-dressed Fanning sisters), when Britney Spears’ plaid miniskirts were the norm. A British study by retailer CC has found that a woman reaches her sartorial prime at age 35. Three out of four women felt their style improved after their 20s with one in three women saying they looked the best they ever had in their 30s.

What gives? Apparently it all comes down to self-confidence, wisdom and maturity. Empowered mid-30-year-olds know how to reference the latest trends with enough confidence to carry them off.

So naturally, we made a list of our personal style icons (think: Chloë Sevigny, Kate Lanphear, Vanessa Paradis, the list goes on) and found that—shocker—they’re all around 35.

And it doesn’t stop at 35. Arguably the best part of this whole study was that iconoplast Helen Mirren beat out Kate Middleton (another 30-year-old) as the celebrity woman most considered to be in her prime. She’s 66! We can’t say we’re surprised though—have you seen her in a bikini? She’s a total knockout.

It’s high time we recognize the style contributions of the mature set. The success of blogs like Advanced Style has shown that style doesn’t fade with age. We aspire to dress like those women. Just look at two of M.A.C’s most recent collections: Carine Roitfeld and Iris Apfel. Both mature ladies and both with closets we’d gladly dive into.
