Louis Vuitton show for Spring 2012 opened with the tinkling of a music box and the rising of a scrim to reveal a carousel carrying girls in pale dresses on cream-coloured ponies. It might have seemed a saccharine set-up, but such a response could just be a bad case of not getting it. The news of the season is gentle news. That’s what Marc Jacobs got so right at Louis Vuitton. All the white and those whitened pastels—a key colour trend, favoured by both traditionalists such as Ralph Lauren and more experimental types such as Christopher Kane and Hussein Chalayan—might have appeared to be borrowed from a bag of miniature marshmallows. But the candied palette was not there simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. It also appeals to a Bluetooth appetite when dished out in fabrics that are marvels of modern technology—things like foam organza, silk cellophane and laser-cut leatherette. For the theory-minded, it’s tempting to conclude from the fact that we live in times when you see toddlers dressed in skull patterns and infants swaddled in camo-print blankets that it’s only logical their moms should start playing with pink and baby blue. What’s in your bag, Nicholas Mellamphy?

Comments

Photography by Erin Seaman

Well, aren’t you in for a treat! Today, we’re exploring the Pierre Hardy bag belonging to bow-tied boy about town and The Room’s creative director, Nicholas Mellamphy. A long-time purveyor of chicness, Mellamphy was the genius behind Yorkville boutique Hazel, and more recently has become one of the key members of the Bay’s new transformation team. You can thank him later for putting the likes of Proenza Schouler, Thakoon, Erdem, Christopher Kane, and Carven together in one room, but in the meantime, let’s snoop!

Let’s explore! »

Scuba do: Check out FASHION’s photo shoot and go behind the scenes in tropical Hawaii

Comments

FASHION SHOOT: Scuba do

Escape the chill and head to heavenly Hawaii in resort brights, surfer prints and dive-inspired details. For our very first resort collections shoot, we couldn’t imagine a more fitting setting than the swaying palms and long stretches of white sandy beach on Oahu—especially since Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marni resort were blooming with wild botanical prints and scuba-inspired silhouettes in a tropical paradise palette. Armed with a salt water–filled spray bottle and a boatload of bronzer, our hair and makeup artist Greg Wencel created a sun-kissed, unfussy beach beauty look for model Natalia Bogdanova. A short drive along the coast from Waikiki, we scaled the sloping cliffscape to the crashing waves below to shoot on sparkling black rocks at Lana’i Lookout (or Rifle Range, as the locals call it) and Halona Cove. We spent the day flinging ourselves into the pounding surf to cool off between frames. Our story was completed with a professional surfer as handsome accessory—and on the last day of the trip, we mustered the courage to take a lesson and catch a few waves of our own.

Vote! Who takes the cake for best dressed designer/muse duo at the British Fashion Awards?

Comments

Some of our favourite fashion talents were celebrated last night at the 2011 British Fashion Awards in London, with Sarah Burton, Mary Katrantzou, and Charlotte Olympia (to name a few) coming out on top in their respective categories. As always, what everyone was wearing was equally top of our minds, and we’ve especially enjoyed these neat little red carpet photo combos of megawatt designer avec megawatt muse (or muse-come-designer in Victoria Beckham’s case). In one corner, we’ve got the bright-young-thing duo of Christopher Kane and Alexa Chung donning a look from his Spring 2012 collection, and with Charlotte Olympia kitten heels. In the other, you’ve got the black-on-black pairing of Marc Jacobs and Beckham in her own design (may we just say, Vicky’s looking less extreme than usual, and we like it) The always-cool McCartney and Moss duo triumph with Stella in a sexy-tomboy suit and Kate in all-over fishnet. So, who takes the cake for the best dressed duo?
