The Hoxton was abuzz with Brit power for the Topshop launch party and concert on Tuesday night, from main man Sir Philip Green and fashion director Kate Phelan, to Jamie Hince, one part of rock duo The Kills (more or less importantly, he’s also one part of Mr. and Mrs. Kate Moss, but you already knew that, didn’t you). Incidentally, the space was also abuzz with It girl power, from Harley Viera-Newton on the turntables, to Coco Rocha in the VIP section. While some complained of the noise, we were amongst the large group of fans including designer Samantha Beckerman, Pink Tartan gal Sarah Marantz, writer Sarah Nicole Prickett, and photographer Adam Levett, that were more than tickled to be enjoying such an intimate setting for rocking out to Hince and Alison Mosshart’s moody hits.

SNP’s word of the day: Provocateuse

Word: Provocateuse
Meaning: A female provocateur. What’s a provocateur? Oh, come on. It’s someone who provokes, who engenders controversy for controversy’s sake.

MON dieu! Industry insiders share their most memorable Jean Paul Gaultier moments

Photography by Peter Stigter
“I always think of Gaultier in terms of the colours he used early on, relishing his lurid shades of green, yellow and brown. I’ve enjoyed his references to French culture—pulpy policiers or Yvette Horner, the accordéoniste–and always thought of his palette as a tribute to the tobacco-stained walls of Paris dives.” —David Livingstone, Writer

MFW diary: Showroom frenzy, chic exits at Moschino and Etro

Left: Moschino and right: Etro shot by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/Getty Images
The morning begins with heart shaped doughnuts and an officer’s club feeling at Moschino. There are heaps of gold trimmed masculine naval uniforms, black and white tux inspired trouser suits and a dash of sweet flouncy dresses thrown in as a feminine counterpoint by way of ruffles, bustles, floral prints and peplums.
Why Coco Rocha walks the runway with a chicken atop her head, I’ll never know, but one things for sure: she certainly knows how to put the chic into chicken!

Q&A: Todd Lynn’s toughed out tailoring hits the big time

Left, Todd Lynn. Right, Chiaki Nozu, photo by Ian Gavan.
When Todd Lynn moved to London in 1998, we doubt the Smith Falls native guessed that he’d one day be atop the British fashion scene. Already beloved by the likes of Rihanna, Mick Jagger, Courtney Love and fellow Canuck Coco Rocha, the tailor with a hard rock edge was recognized by the British Fashion Council at last night’s Fashion Forward awards. Along with Meadham Kirchoff and Peter Pilotto, Lynn recieved a two season-long sponsorship focusing on financial and business planning.
Eager to hear how he’s been taking it all in, we quizzed Lynn on the award, the future, and of course, how it feels to be repping Canada across the pond!
How does it feel to be recognized for your talent in such a big way?
I’m thrilled to have been selected as one of the designers to receive the BFC’s Fashion Forward Award. It’s great to have my hard work recognized by a panel of some of the most influential fashion people in London.
What is the Fashion Forward fund going to help you do for the next year?
The money will go towards the expenses of the show, but I am especially looking forward to working with the teams at the BFC and [Coutts & Co] on the mentoring side of the award which will provide invaluable business insight and information to help my business grow.
How does it feel to be the only Canadian in the mix?
Yay Canada! I’m so proud to be part of the group of Canadians who are such a big part of London Fashion Week. It’s great that we can show the fashion talent that Canada can produce and that we can hopefully give a little inspiration to those fashion students slaving away in Canada, in showing that they can make it…. If they work very very very hard.
Any way you’d give us a tiny little tidbit into what fall looks like? We can’t wait!
I never give anything away before the show…. Watch this space…

“There is so much that is put into [a photo]: hair, make-up, Photoshop. Hours are put into that one photo. I wish women and girls alike didn’t read into it. It is art. It can be poked and prodded. It’s not exactly what you see,” Coco Rocha told the National Post. [National Post] Read more »
