Dream Collaborations

From the upcoming Versace for H&M collaboration to Danier’s ongoing Canadian-on-Canadian capsule collections with the likes of Mark Fast, Greta Constantine and FASHION contributor George Antonopoulos, high-low team ups are continuing to bring luxury designs to the masses. We haven’t had enough. In fact, we vote for more! Here are four mega-designers and Canadian stores that we think should get together and jump on the bandwagon post-haste.

The Provocateur: After 35 cheeky years in the business, life is still a cabaret for couturier Jean Paul Gaultier

Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier isn’t crazy about career retrospectives. “I think they can be like a funeral sometimes,” winces the original bad boy of fashion, who turns 60 next year. We are sitting on the stage of Gaultier’s Rue Saint-Martin headquarters, where his punk-themed Spring 2011 couture collection has just been unveiled. Models strutted down the runway in his sailor-striped organza and leather lace bombers to a voice-over of Catherine Deneuve describing each exquisite outfit, rather than music. Almost everyone—including boy bride Andrej Pejic—was coiffed in some riff on a mohawk, and Gaultier himself came bounding out to take his bow in a spiked wig.

Canadian shoe designer creates Tron-inspired sandal

Comments

Quebec-born shoe designer Jerome C. Rousseau (jeromecrousseau.com), whose celeb fans include Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Kristen Stewart and French indie actress Roxane Mesquida (star of the designer’s new campaign), was tapped by Disney to create a shoe to celebrate the launch of Tron Legacy, which opens December 17. It was a fortuitous opportunity–Rosseau loved the look of the original Tron as a teenager. The shoe, a metallic leather sandal that’s available in pewter or gold, were available at the Tron Legacy pop-up shop in L.A., which also featured specially-created bags from Brooklyn-based accesssories label Hayden-Harnett. You’ll be able to pick up these shiny beauties at specialty boutiques worldwide come February.

Missoni’s watch collabo swaps straps for scarves

Comments

By Laura Schober

Missoni has collaborated with plastic watch makers ToyWatch on a limited-edition collection that launched today. The colourful designs, inspired by the Italian brand’s signature scarves, swap standard straps for fabrics such as lightweight silks and zigzag knits that are meant to be wound around the wrist and knotted.

The watches ($540 each) come in six styles, and only 250 of each model will be sold worldwide. Five Canadian stores–Blubird in Vancouver, The Bay Queen Street and Cupido in Toronto, Sophie Cosmetics and Accessories in Richmond Hill and Abe & Mary’s in Montreal–will carry only one of each style, so if you want one, snag it before they sell out.

Gallery: Anna Dello Russo walked with a poodle in last night’s Lanvin x H&M “couture” show

Alber Elbaz has said, regarding Lanvin’s collaboration with H&M, that he wasn’t looking to make Lanvin cheaper, but to make H&M more haute. In an interesting twist on the cheap-chic concept, H&M staged an “haute couture” runway show in New York last night, which featured customized, high-end versions of Elbaz’s and Lanvin menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver’s creations for the Swedish fast-fashion house. [View the full gallery] In tradition of a couture show, there was even a bridal look–a winking face tee paired with a short off-white ruffled skirt and a puffy headpiece with a long veil. The show was full of the fun that Elbaz is clearly going for with this collection–Anna Dello Russo sashayed out in a hot pink dress accompanied by an equally poufy poodle, and the closing look was the Lanvin x H&M garment bag, which looks quite cute when belted.
