Haute fashion dolls are having a bit of a moment. Witness the Lady Gaga Barbies created by Beijing enthusiast Veik, or the designer finger puppets by Rubbish Magazine. Next up are some truly spectacular creations by New York artist Andrew Yang. Yang, who has designed for Dennis Basso and has a collection of couture dolls called The Kouklitas, created a set of big-eyed beauties dressed in Spring 2010 looks from Proenza Schouler, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Gareth Pugh et al. for an issue of The Block magazine. The dolls will eventually be available on The Kouklitas website with a retail price of about US$600 or Yang can make you a custom piece if youre designer love leans a different way. It looks like Daul Kim did indeed commit suicide. Paris police say her boyfriend found her hanged in her apartment. In a recent entry on her blog, the South Korean model stated “the more i gain the more lonely it is … i know i’m like a ghost i have nothing but myself.” [AP, The Cut]

If you didn’t already have tons of totally rational jealousy over Style Rookie blogger Tavi Gevinson‘s Rodarte friendship and fashion week access, here’s another bit for you: The 13-year-old will be the guest of honor next week at the Comme des Garçons party in Tokyo. [WWD] Read more »

Donald G. Fisher, co-founder of the Gap, has died from cancer at the age of 81. Fisher and his wife Doris opened the first store of the retail chain in San Francisco in 1969 following their inability to find jeans that fit properly. [NYTimes]

A new wave of masculinity has arrived: the mantyhose. Selfridges’ tights for men by lingerie brand Unconditional are available in black, beige and charcoal. Menswear director David Walker-Smith calls them “extremely versatile,” going on to say, “we expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement.” [The Cut] What do you think of the mantyhose movement? Is it the ultimate in Shakespearean-inspired fashion or far too feminine for the modern man?

Vintage Comme des Garçons (left) and Y-3 from Apt. 909.

Apt. 909 (909 Dundas St. W., 416-916-7599, apt909.blogspot.com), coincidentally also my apartment number, is a cozy vintage stop with an extensive archive of designer vintage that ranges from Louboutin, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier and YSL to the more eclectic gems from Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto. With ephemera casually scattered about in shop amidst antique decor, each piece is tagged like an artifact with handwritten descriptions by owners Elizabeth Gondek and Ria Jones. Read more »

Comme on

Comments

By Jennifer Campbell

Around here, we’re getting pretty jaded about these high/low designer collaborations. We’d never begrudge anyone their Abaeté for Payless pumps (least of all because we love them ourselves), but it’s starting to feel like enough.
