Canadian fashion mainstays, Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse, presented their fall 2011 collection to a packed house of steadfast fans at day three of LG Fashion Week. Pleasantly surprising us from the get-go, bits of bold neon colour were introduced into what is usually a fairly muted collection, with a series of gorgeous ethnic-geometric silk prints. Continuing the cavalcade of colour, abstract florals a la Dries Van Noten took their turn on the catwalk, wowing us in vibrant cobalt turquoise and more subtle watercolour jacquards. While we could take or leave the series of black and charcoal textile separates, a starry-skied metallic bathrobe coat (the sleeveless version too) is tops on our can’t-live-without list.

Toronto Fashion Week: Comrags kicks it with a laid back fall show
Judging from their Fall 2010 collection of plaid frocks, oversized sweaters and quirky wool skirt suiting, it’s easy to see why Comrags has developed a cult following over their nearly three decades in the biz. Designers Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse consistently stick to their no-fail formula of texture + simple lines + a natural aesthetic = forever pieces. This season, the latter included a knee-length tartan skirt, several digital reptile print dresses, borrowed-from-your-boyfriend roomy knits and an olive green wool skirt suit. Never one to be overly precious, the Comrags girl throws on her distressed combat boots with, well, everything. Big love.

The Bay makes a Blanket Statement with ten Canadian designers

Comrags' take on the Bay's point blanket coat
Back in October, we told you about the Bay’s new line of Canadiana–The Hudson’s Bay Company Collection–the brings canoes, paddles and point blankets together with collaborations with Canadian fashion names such as Pink Tartan, Harricana and Virginia Johnson. The line launched Tuesday night at a packed cocktail party where guests noshed on de rigueur nouveau comfort food–grilled cheese sandwiches with homemade ketchup, potatoes with bison tartare and maple syrup poured over freezer-made snow. The big attraction of the evening was the official unveiling of ten one-of-a-kind coats–together dubbed The Blanket Statement–that the Bay commissioned from a group of Canadian designers who played with the iconic point blanket. Toronto: Comrags, Andy Thê-Anh, Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style Fall 2009

COMRAGS Fall 2009. Photography by Jess Baumung
Packed schedule on the LG roster with some of Toronto’s most well-known labels – Comrags, Andy Thê-Anh, Pink Tartan and Joe Fresh Style. Time to rev up those fashion batteries and re-gloss those air-kissers…
Comrags [watch our interview] designers Joyce Gunhouse and Judy Cornish delivered a strong Fall 2009 collection. And if the wool plaids, printed knits and florals didn’t wow you (as if they wouldn’t…) then surely the large bouquets presented to the designers by the Comrags’ kids during their runway bow would have touched your haute little heart.

The media lounge is starting to fill up with grumpy eds: Not enough food, the loo sitch is rather bleak, and the rain is starting to wreak havoc on blowouts and Bruno Frisonis. Best accessories spotted at the tents: Everything-but-the-kitchen-sink patent totes, jewel-tone cocktail rings, fedoras, bright scarves and feather hairbands. New must-have nail colour: Red.
