Block party! Free K’naan and cupcakes at tomorrow’s TIFF Bell Lightbox opening

Comments

Here’s a TIFF party you don’t need an invite for: Tomorrow, September 12, the TIFF Bell Lightbox is throwing a huge block party to celebrate the grand opening of Toronto’s newest movie house.

The ribbon cutting is at noon, but musical festivities happen all day. The line-up includes Fefe Dobson, The Sadies, and, just announced, the no-longer secret musical guest, Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan. Plus, there’s an exhibit of posters and artifacts from the Essential 100 films, interactive installations and commissions from the likes of Atom Egoyan and Guy Maddin.

And if you’re not sold yet, you should also know that there will be free cupcakes.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at King and John Streets.

Sugar-free dessert: Yes, it can be done (deliciously)

On a recent visit, I found Babycakes NYC. This sweetly stylish vegan, gluten-, dairy- and refined sugar-free bakery (beloved by Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel) serves up light, fluffy, moist cupcakes, cookie sandwiches, brownies and macaroons. For a person who has long forsaken the joys of a chocolate cupcake with creamy vanilla frosting (not me, I’ll confess, but my fellow), it’s quite a revelation.

Unfortunately, the bakery won’t deliver to Canada (something about frosting melting in the customs line), but now its founder, Erin McKenna, has shared her secrets in a recipe book (Clarkson Potter, $28)! Read more »
