FASHION plates: Daphne Guinness

Comments

What makes Daphne Guinness a fashion icon? It could be the instantly recognizable platinum and black–striped hairdo, the sky-high heels, or the over-the-top collection of couture clothes and extravagant jewellery. More so, though, it’s the heiress’s fearlessness when it comes to the way she dresses. The Museum at FIT (like so many others) has taken notice and will host an exhibit of Guinness’s clothing collection starting in September. We can’t wait to check out the lineup, which is sure to include some pieces by Guinness favourite Alexander McQueen, so in honour of the occasion we bring you a Daphne-themed edition of FASHION Plates. Take a look through our picks for how to channel a bit of Daphne with every look.

They said/We said: We weigh in on the Kate Moss vs. Charlene Wittstock weekend wedding battle

We didn’t think it was possible to rival the buzz around the royal nuptials (or the buzz around the royal visit, either), but this weekend in Europe, a double wedding of sorts pegged supermodel Kate Moss and former Olympic athlete Charlene Wittstock against Kate and Will in the battle for the biggest wedding of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about Mosstock and the wedding we like to call the Monaco Magnificence.

Moss married Jamie Hince of the Kills on July 1, at St. Peter’s Parish in Southrop. Confirming rumours, the supermodel made a controversial decision by wearing a custom-made sheer, bias-cut John Galliano dress, while Hince opted for a couple of Yves Saint Laurent tuxedos by Stefano Pilati. After the ceremony, the couple hosted a weekend-long reception at Moss’s nearby home. The fashionable guests included Anna Wintour, Jude Law, and Daphne Guinness, as well as a surprise appearance by Galliano (what was on his acid tongue, we would love to know). Stella McCartney also designed three outfits for the bride, including the white pantsuit she sported as she left for her honeymoon on a helicopter. Very Bianca Jagger, if we may say so.

Wittstock chose an off the shoulder, beaded Armani Privé gown for her big day. The ceremony took place at the medieval palace of Monaco and was said to be more formal than Moss’s the day before. Naomi Campbell managed to make it to both events, with outfit changes to boot. Karl Lagerfeld, on the other hand, chose to attend the royal affair, as did Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Karolina Kurkova. Despite the gossip that Wittstock attempted to leave her fiancé, Prince Albert of Monaco, after learning of his third illegitimate child, the event went on as planned and ended with a heartfelt speech from the prince to his new wife.

Comments

A longstanding and decidedly British tradition is donning all kinds of extravagant headwear to nuptials⎯a tradition the royal family has long followed.

Catering to both the fashion crowd as well as royalty is designer and milliner Philip Treacy, a former protégé of Isabella Blow, and frequent collaborator of the late Alexander McQueen⎯besides virtually every female royal, his pieces have sat on the heads of Lady Gaga, SJP, Grace Jones and Daphne Guinness.

The chronicles of John Galliano and the quickest pardon in fashion history

Comments

As is the case with virtually any news story these days, the developments in the John Galliano story⎯the designer being accused of hurling anti-Semitic insults at an (incidentally non-Jewish) couple while drinking at the Paris café, Le Perle⎯can be measured in tweets, quotes and snippets. Given the proliferated speed at which these bits are published and publicized, it’s amazing to witness how quickly the industry’s reaction has gone from appalled to forgiving to looking forward to the designer’s imminent replacement at Dior. Given the industry’s propensity for forgetfulness⎯history has made fools of those who once condemned Coco Chanel for her involvement with the Nazis or Kate Moss for being caught with cocaine⎯we have no doubt that Galliano will be back at the top in no time. All references to the frankly horrifying severity of his remarks will vanish and whereas Chanel’s and Moss’s actions took years to do the same, Galliano’s have almost done so in a matter of 14 days. Meanwhile, as rumours swirl for a possible replacement by Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz and Marc Jacobs, we take a look back at the quickest judgment turnarounds in fashion history.
