Beauty obsession: The glittery moon manicure

Even by our own standards, nail frenzy at the FASHION offices has reached a new high with the sudden mania for the half-moon manicure. This polish option, where the curve at the bottom of the nail is painted a different colour, was popular in the 1940s and has seen a resurgence in recent years as a favourite of Dita Von Teese and as a runway staple at shows for Ruffian, Vena Cava, Thakoon and Christian Dior.

Last night, we gathered at Tips Nail Bar (844a Danforth Ave., 416-405-8477) for an office baby shower and were introduced to a take on the moon that incorporates another big nail trend: Glitter. Read more »

Q&A: Dita Von Teese on why she’ll never do a Christmas show

Dita Von Teese had ’em packed in and panting for her Be Cointreauversial Show in New Orleans. The crowd at the House of Blues lapped up every second of the burlesque superstar’s turn with an oversized Swarovski-encrusted cocktail glass, in which she splashed around in a simulacrum of her violet-tinged signature drink, the Cointreau Teese. The next day, she held court in a suite at the languor-inducing The Roosevelt hotel, where we sat down to talk about all things holiday.

Fashion news: Nicolas Ghesquière is a Superstar, a knock-off Vuitton house and George Clooney doesn’t wear long jean shorts

Balenciaga‘s creative director Nicolas Ghesquière will be honoured by The Fashion Group International as their latest Superstar and will receive the award in October at FGI’s Night of Stars. No word yet on whether Molly Shannon will appear as Mary Katherine Gallagher. [Vogue UK]

George Clooney was recently in court in Milan testifying against the people who claimed he was starting the clothing line “GC Exclusive.” He denied the legitimacy of a photo of himself with the defendant (whom he supposedly never met) on a sartorial claim: “I also don’t wear long jean shorts.” [The Cut]

It’s an almost-trend!: Dita Von Teese sports a skeleton outfit at Gaultier couture

Two’s not quite a trend, but it was hard not to wonder if a trendlet was in the offing when Dita Von Teese appeared on the Jean Paul Gaultier runway in a bony ensemble. Von Teese came out mid-show, swagged and be-plumed like Norma Desmond, and proceeded to remove her dress, revealing a bedazzled exoskeleton. Less haunting, certainly, than Riccardo Tisci’s ghostly lace squelettes earlier this week at Givenchy, but a hell of a lot more fun. Read more »

The Diane von Furstenberg show at New York fashion week will be Nathan Jenden‘s last turn as the company’s creative director. Jenden is leaving the label to focus on his own line in London. [Grazia]

First Neiman Marcus, then Net-a-Porter dropped Emanuel Ungaro for Spring 2010, and word is that now the Ungaro boutique on Madison Avenue is shutting its doors. The shop is reportedly calling customers with the news that they’re closing down shop and are having a liquidation sale. An employee at the shop confirmed the sale, but not the closure. [The Cut]
