Spotted: Carey Mulligan does the kitten flick

Comments

It would have been very easy for Carey Mulligan to do a full-on cat eye with this Roland Mouret dress—it begs for retro accompaniments. However, at last week’s London Film Critics’ Circle Awards Mulligan opted for the kitten flick, a trend that’s been gaining momentum since Dolce &Gabbana showed it on their Spring 2012 runway. Mulligan keeps the rest of her look very simple—almost too simple!—with a light wash of rosy lipgloss and a hint of blush on the apples of her cheeks. What do you think? Does Mulligan appear too “daytime” for a red carpet, or does it work?

They said/We said: Over 1,000 swarm Dolce & Gabbana’s Hong Kong store in protest

Comments

Photography by Peter Stigter

It may have looked like Wal-Mart on Black Friday, but over a thousand people outside of a Hong Kong Dolce & Gabbana store yesterday were there to protest rather than to shop. The angry mob took to the brand’s Tsim Sha Tsui location—they were demanding an apology for the ban on taking pictures of the storefront display.

The brand prompted the ban of photo ops outside the store after a distinguished shopper and apparent government official complained about shutters going off outside the store, for fear of appearing in the shots after being scrutinized for owning a luxury watch.

The plot thickened, though, with the rumoured comment made by a security guard at the Tsim Sha Tsui location, that only mainland Chinese tourists were allowed to take photos outside the store, adding fuel to ongoing racial clashes between Hong Kong natives and the mainland Chinese.

In a statement released earlier today, the brand said:It is regrettable that Dolce & Gabbana has been brought into this matter, but we wish to underline that our company has not taken part in any action aiming at offending the Hong Kong public.”

Vote! Best look from the MTV Europe Awards red carpet: Jessie J, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Bar Refaeli

Comments

While Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga were the big winners on stage at last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards, we have our top picks for best dressed on the red carpet. Singer Jessie J kept her typically ferocious look going strong with a black and yellow leopard print dress by Dolce & Gabbana—one of many outfits she wore during the night. Selena Gomez also made multiple outfit changes during the awards (9 to be exact!), but with good reason: she was hosting the show. We love her in this white long-sleeved minidress by Marchesa, it certainly pulls the focus away from those pesky rumours surrounding her boyfriend…  Moving on! Katy Perry continues her retro-girl vibe with pink pin-up curls (we’re thankful she finally touched up her roots) and a Grease-worthy ensemble from Jeremy Scott’s Spring 2012 collection. The designer was also her date to the show. And model Bar Refaeli wore a custom-designed dress by Replay, which, if you like it, can be described as having an ombre waterfall hem. If you don’t like it, we’re not entirely opposed to the term “mullet dress.”

FASHION Plates: Your ultimate guide to the haute-ifying Rocky Horror Picture Show

Comments

Trick-or-treating aside, one of our favourite Halloween rituals has to be attending a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. For those of you virgins (we’re not really calling you virgins) who have never been to a show, we implore you to try it for yourself this year. There are generally midnight showings for many days leading up to and on Halloween night, and it’s a great excuse to dress up, bring some rice to a theatre, and let your freak flag fly.

But, what to wear? The Rocky Horror look can get a little trashy at times, so we present our ultimate guide to haute-ifying it. Yes, some of these price tags are a wee bit of a splurge for one night only, but we predict that you’ll want to wash and repeat for many years to come.
