Eddie Borgo in Paris

It’s Paris. It’s raining. And the fashion cognoscenti are rethinking their footwear for Paris Fashion Week Spring 2013. Velvet slippers are out. And maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to leave the Hunter wellies at home. Here are some high and low lights from my first day in the city of light:

Champagne with Eddie Borgo

American jewellery designer Eddie Borgo rents a stunning apartment overlooking the Palais Royale to take appointments with press and buyers. It’s a brilliant move that often results in editors from competing magazines lingering on the chocolate brown sofa and sipping champagne. “They are usually numb by the time they get to Paris,” Borgo says. “I offer them a familial atmosphere.” That and great jewellery, including an enormous gold neck cuff and a new octoganal link used for chains and lattice-like balls strung like pearls.

It’s 26 minutes and 11 seconds into the third episode of HBO’s Girls. A struggling writer named Hannah Horvath, played by the show’s 26-year-old creator/star, Lena Dunham, is in her bedroom staring at a laptop. She’s just endured the most hellish month of her adult life: Her parents have stopped paying her rent, her doctor has diagnosed her with HPV and her former college boyfriend has let her know that her “handsomeness” helped him realize his attraction to men.

Instead of having a breakdown, Hannah decides to throw down. She double clicks an MP3 of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” jumps off her bed and swings her tattooed arms to the gunning beat. Her impeccably put-together roommate, Marnie, played by 24-year-old Allison Williams, catches Hannah’s impromptu dance party and joins in. Together in their tiny Brooklyn apartment they hair-flip the pain away, share a hug and make the tragic magic. The credits roll. Read more »

Should your hair match your heels? Yes, if they are colour-blocked in the season’s brights. But what goes in-between? Architectural angles with chunks of light and dark.

PFW diary: Our cheat sheet to a day full of Jean Paul Gaultier, Viktor & Rolf, Cacharel, Sonia Rykiel, and Kanye West gossip

Judging from the long line-ups at the Gelato stands I whizzed by today, Paris is doing Summer: Part Deux. While the temperatures continue to soar, the PFWers continue to get creative with the contents of their luggage in an attempt to beat the heat: Knits are paired with shorts and summer dresses with suede knee-high boots; open-toed flat sandals are back; hair has gone the way of the top knot and makeup is down to a slash of bright lipstick. Bags run the gamut from leather to straw to skins to canvas. And sunglasses? If you don’t have a pair that’s brightly coloured/aviator/dark and oversized/white, you might as well stay in your hotel room and catch up on the Jackson Trial. Luckily, I brought two pairs that fit the bill (David Yurman and Marc Jacobs) so I spent Saturday dodging French doggie doo on the streets in between shows and presentations. Here’s the highlight reel of my day:

FASHION plates: Patti Smith

Comments

By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter

In the world of icons, it truly doesn’t get any better than Patti Smith. We’d confess our undying devotion to the singer’s lyrics, voice, style, heart, poems and just about anything else she is responsible for (and let us tell you, there’s a lot). The recently released book of never-before-seen images, Patti Smith 1969-1976 by Judy Linn, breathes new life into her everlasting stylistic impact by showing her just before she hit the big time. We channeled Smith’s impact in the best way we know how, shopping in the name of!

PFW diary: Gaga for Colette, Chanel and of course… Mugler!

Comments

Left: Lady Gaga shot by Marc Piasecki/Getty Images. Right: Coco Rocha shot by Eric Ryan/Getty Images.

I wish I could tell you that after a transatlantic red-eye and a nap, my first day in Paris started with something noble, like the sculpture exhibit by contemporary British artist Tony Cragg at the Louvre. But, heck, Colette and Chanel have teamed up to create an “ephemeral boutique,” conveniently around the corner from my hotel!
