Paris notes: Structure and citrus at Stella McCartney, jumpsuits and peasant frills at YSL, and more [gallery]
Paris hasn’t offered up much tailoring for spring ’11. But Stella McCartney built her business on the structured jacket and she isn’t about to abandon what she knows best. Showing amid the opulence of the Opera Garnier, McCartney delivered a collection that hit all the top trends and more. There were soft printed dresses with hip-high slits, a delicious citrus-print tunic and pants, and pastel suits with slim, cuffed trousers. The designer also offered her take on the hybrid skirt/pant, a full, fluid bottom that looks like a slit skirt from the front, and a palazzo pant from the back. McCartney, expectant with baby number three, bounded out to take her bow. She is her customer, a woman on the go.
Stefano Pilati might also be a man on the go–the rumour mill has him exiting Yves Saint Laurent any day now. His concise spring collection offered slim black jumpsuits, stiff peasant frills, backless shirts, and the sleeveless jacket that will be a must-have for spring.
Other highlights of the day: Pink chiffon, ostrich feathers and garden party prints at Giles Deacon’s flirty, ultrafeminine debut for Emanuel Ungaro; dancewear-inspired dresses at Chloé, leopard print mixed with solids at Giambattista Valli.

Anna Wintour spoke at the Pratt Institute last night in a tribute to Irving Penn, and we got a glimpse into the softer side of the Vogue editor-in-chief, calling Penn a “seductive” man who she immediately had “an intellectual crush [on].” She concluded her speech quite emotionally, saying “He made me a better editor. He was always in my head…. Irving’s gifts to us will not end.” [Fashionista] Read more »

Fashion news: Alaïa wants to work with H&M, Catherine McNeil is engaged to Ruby Rose, and is Giles going to Ungaro?
Rumour has it that Giles Deacon may take over as the revolving-door role of creative director for Emanuel Ungaro. Deacon was spotted with Ungaro owner Asim Abdullah last Friday in Paris, and in the world of fashion gossip that obviously means they’re working together. [Vogue UK]
Catherine McNeil‘s girlfriend, Aussie MTV host Ruby Rose, apparently confirmed their engagement to Women’s Day and they were both in L.A. recently sporting engagement rings. The fashion world went crazy last week after seeing Lady Gaga carrying a marker-customized Hermès Birkin. Artist Terence Koh has released images of himself drawing more Japanese characters on the coveted handbag, so that it’s now entirely covered. Do we smell a cry for collaboration? [Fashionista]

Fashion news: Tom Ford launches lipstick and plunders design houses, Ungaro not for sale and light-up Choos sell out
It’s no secret that Tom Ford is making a foray into womenswear, but he’s remained mum on the details of his design team. Word is that the designer has nabbed Caroline Tixier from Givenchy and accessories designer Pablo Coppola from Alexander McQueen. [The Cut]
But before we can see his Fall 2010 women’s collection, Ford is expanding his Private Blend collection to include lipstick. Available in June, the line includes 12 “universally flattering colors,” because as Ford says, there is “no more dramatic accessory than a perfect lip.” We’re hard pressed to disagree.
