We show you how to get Olivia Wilde’s textured short hair and two-tone smoky eyes

Comments

Olivia Wilde cut quite a few inches off her hair during the holidays and debuted the new style—complete with ombré highlights—this weekend at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It’s easy to see why the ombré trend is one that won’t go away anytime soon: done right, it’s always flattering. Wilde looks undoubtedly modern and fresh, and her caramel-coloured strands add another layer of dimension to her already glossy, textured hair. Best of all, the look allows her two-tone smoky eye makeup to really stand out.

Afternoon beauty fix: The easiest way to stop biting your nails

Comments

How can I stop biting my nails? It’s a terrible habit, but I can’t seem to kick it.
You’re in luck because our best advice is something you’ll want to hear: get a weekly manicure. Go for nail art, Shellac, or a shade you totally love and would hate to destroy. If you take Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in “Metallic Sage” ($25, at Holt Renfrew and select Bay stores) to your manicurist, we can safely assume that you’ll halt your irksome habit—its gold-green hue will remind you pleasantly of the money you spend to maintain nice nails, and it’s a lovely shade for fall.

Gone are the days of the one-lipstick woman. This fall, red lips are trending, and now you don’t have to pick just one hue. From bold red to deep purple, it’s all about confidence in carrying a shade. Sure, you might have a preference, but there’s no need to feel limited. Switch from poppy to pomegranate from day to night—no one’s stopping you.

Afternoon beauty fix: Quick tips for getting the perfect wingtip

Comments

I could spend my whole life trying to draw a wingtip line and never get it right. Is there a liner out there that will make it easier?
Drawing a clean, precise line requires practice, a steady hand, and the right eyeliner consistency. We prefer a liquid liner with a felt-tip wand because it slides easily over the lid and distributes the ideal amount of pigment. Starting at the centre of your lid, press the tip directly on top of your lashes and draw a single line that extends beyond the outer corner of your eye. Use tiny strokes to fill in any gaps between individual lashes. Worry less about having a straight line, and more about ensuring that no spaces are left uncoloured. The ’60s-style flick is created by filling the tiny gap between your lower and upper lashes with a second line, and then connecting it to the first. Black liner is classic, but we’re loving the greasy metallic lustre of Pure Color Liquid EyeLiner in by Estée Lauder ($25, limited edition at Holt Renfrew and select Bay stores across Canada) because it marries two of our favourite fall trends: metallic eyes and graphic liner.
