Toronto notes: Evan Biddell kicks off fashion week(s) festivities

Evan Biddell kicked off two weeks of fashion shows and events last night with a presentation of his Spring 2011 “Kingdom” collection. Fashion faithfuls trekked to the hinterlands (aka Wilson and Keele) to watch Biddell’s fashion show which was held in an eerie factory stuffed with mannequins. The collection was heavy on drama with armour-inspired looks but there were some very wearable, more commercial pieces alongside his usual works of fashion art.

Look for our continued coverage of fashion week–both on and off the official runway–including Philip Sparks’s highly anticipated first womenswear show tomorrow.

Party pics: Voguing at Toronto’s wildest art party–the Power Ball

Comments

PR pro Natasha Penzo at Power Ball 12

Selling out is déclassé among art types, until it comes to fundraisers. And a whole week before Power Ball 12, the city’s wildest (read: only wild) art party was most emphatically sold out. Which meant everyone wanted to be there last Thursday night. Which, in turn, made the night feel like the sum of all Fears of Missing Out (FOMO).

Fashion news: Eau de Bruce Willis, Marc Jacobs’ book store, and Evan Biddell wants you to buy that dress you borrowed

Evan Biddell is tired of a culture of rampant dress-borrowing. He tweeted this morning: “ok ok, that was a little harsh, but 90% of my clients are Fabulous women, and if they are all borrowing outfits, I only sell 10% of the time.” Then he asks: “HOW IS THIS SUPPORTING CANADIAN FASHION??????????” His solution? “maybe its a matter of becoming organized? we could all have the same policy? you wear it, you buy it. sounds fair to me.” After all, exposure doesn’t mean much if it never turns into a sale. Biddell’s frustration may stem from this weekend’s Juno Awards–which will surely feature many borrowed frocks. He followed up his comments with “does anyone watch the canadian pop music awards anyways?” [Evan Biddell Twitter]

Another day, another celebrity fragrance line. Except this time, it’s a male celebrity creating a signature scent: Bruce Willis is launching a fragrance set to be released in July. Eau d’ie hard maybe? [Styleite] Read more »

Toronto Fashion Week: Evan Biddell plays with cork and contorted volume in a directional fall show

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

In the midst of a sea of safe clothing showing this week, Evan Biddell set out to prove that he’s not one for commercial appeal alone. His sophisticated gang of prehistoric warriors stomped it out in neon, ’80s graphic-print jumpsuits, silver lame dresses and super sculptural, controlled, but contorted volume in coats, pants, skirts and tunics (think stiff funnel necks, elongated pointy shoulders, puffed up backs and sharply-jutting thigh panels). We were particularly taken with his meditations on texture, using cork, as well as fringed, slashed, shredded and stamped leather details. And kudos to Biddell for a well-edited collection of one-of-a-kind pieces (which will all be available exclusively at his new boutique, Oz, at 134 Ossington Ave. in Toronto). It’s sure to win him fans and recognition beyond his TV fame.

A new venue for LG Fashion Week. (Round 2)

We mentioned earlier today that LG Fashion Week would now be taking place at the Allstream Centre at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. According to a release sent today by the Fashion Design Council of Canada, the organization “requires a much larger canvas to articulate its vision” and that the warehouse at 30 Ordnance Street was a “romantic idea,” but fraught with logistical challenges. How a warehouse is romantic, we don’t know, so we’ll just join the chorus of tweeters who are just happy that there will be proper washrooms. Read more »
