One of our favourite dress-up occasions, the annual Buy Design party, has just announced the details for the seventh edition of the fundraiser, which supports Windfall (windfallbasics.com)–a clothing bank that provides new clothing and basic-needs items to vulnerable families in the GTA. Next year’s theme is the Dirty ’30s–apropos considering the current climate Read the rest of this entry »

Canadian designer Erdem Moralioglu will showcase a collection of his favourite designs London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. Erdem’s pieces will be showcased in the Raphael Gallery in conjunction with the Fashion In Motion series. “I am thrilled and honoured to be showing at the Victoria & Albert Museum,” said the designer, who has been based in London since 2003. “Since my student days, it has been one of my favourite museums and I even showed my very first collection here.” The four runway shows will be held December 11 (vam.ac.uk) and are free–except for your plane ticket, of course. Event: Preloved’s Julia Grieve and vintage jewellery queen Carole Tanebaum talk upcycling tomorrow

Vintage mavens and do-it-yourself designers should head down to the Textile Museum of Canada (55 Centre Avenue, Toronto, 416-599-5321, textilemuseum.ca) tomorrow night for panel discussion on upcycling (i.e. making old stuff new). Preloved’s Julia Grieve (an expert in this area) will join vintage costume jewellery maven Carole Tanenbaum for the talk, titled Fashion Forum: Style Alchemy. An Absolutly fabulous pop-up

Photography by Alana Kakia

“In an Absolut world,” Justin Broadbent jokes, “all the vodka would be beer.”

For an artist, Broadbent can be such a dude.  He creates almost hyper-actively—photographing, graphic designing, directing music videos (hotdoggarbage.com), mashing up mediums in big-scale works—and now,  he’s been commissioned by Absolut to create a one-day-only art exhibit. But honestly? On the sunny day of our interview, he’d rather be hanging out in the park with pretty girls. And the longer we chat, the clearer I see: this guy is 40 ounces of distilled positivity and not a drop of pretense. Read the rest of this entry »

Win passes to Lainey Gossip’s Smut Soiree

Here at FASHION we hate to gossip. We’ve never even heard of Robert Pattinson or Blake Lively or…BritBrit. Gah! Fine–Brangelina, McGosling, True Blood, JLo! So obviously we’re excited about this: Our favourite dirt disher, Lainey, is hosting her fourth Smut Soiree with the socials at The Society on June 23. The night is a big chat fest with cocktails, hair and makeup touch-ups and a whole lot of tattletaling. The party is totally sold out, but we have a pair of passes to give away. We’ll also be tweeting all night from the secret location.

Lainey will be gabbing with National Post gossip Shinan Govani and a third co-host, who also came to last year’s party. The first person to tell us who it is gets the passes. Dig around here and you’ll find your answer. Email us the answer at fashiondiaries@fashionmagazine.com.

UPDATE: Alright, folks. We have a winner!

**A couple of things:

Only the winner will be contacted.

The party’s in Toronto, so you should either live here or be able to come down on June 23.

There’s a bar (hooray!), so you have to be 19.

Build your own Miss Rowe

sum09missrowe_lg

Ashley Rowe is quickly becoming the go-to designer for cool girls on the event circuit. You don’t have to look too hard to see someone sporting one of her Miss Rowe signature bustiers or modish mini-dresses.

For the next two Saturdays (June 13 and 20, missrowe.com), the designer is hosting a customization event at her studio in the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s Exhibition Place home (285 Manitoba Dr., Pod 3). During a 30-minute appointment, you can choose your favourite style—an A-line top or dress, bustier or bustier dress—and Rowe will help you put together your dream piece. The Textile Museum of Canada (55 Centre Ave., Toronto, 416-599-5321) is a gem of a museum tucked away on a side street near University and Dundas and if you haven’t been there, you really should remedy that tout de suite. Not only is it a trove of fabrics from all over the world, there’s also a regularly rotating line-up of contemporary art exhibitions.

This Thursday, June 4, the museum is hosting the first of its new Texstyle event series, Androgyny ($45, textilemuseum.ca). (It’s an institution that’s near and dear to me—I’m on the organizing committee.) The night includes a discussion on androgyny in art and style between fashion scribe David Livingstone, author Derek McCormack and designer Mikhael Kale, followed by drinks, nibblies from Queen West’s Nyood and tunes spun by DJ Jordan Bimm.  Sephora will also be there doing androgyne glam and you can even squeeze in a museum tour—including the can’t miss fashion exhibit, The Cutting Edge.

This weekend: Opera To Go

apr09operatogo

Like the prospect of a seven-course French dinner, the traditional opera daunts as much as it delights. Luckily, there’s lighter fare in Toronto this weekend. Think of Tapestry’s Opera To Go (March 27 to 29, from $20, 416-973-4000, tapestrynewopera.com)—three short works, followed by a longer (but still only 40-minute) one-act affair—as a tasting of perfect canapés. Witty and modern (read: no old Fidelios here), the selected operas proffer a peek inside the making of opera today. Works are by local luminaries: composers like Glenn James and Abigail Richardson, librettists like Alexis Diamond and Marcia Johnson.

If your appetite’s still not provoked, just think of the pop-cult appeal: even Gossip Girl went to the opera this season, right?
