Afternoon beauty fix: 3 ways to give sparse eyebrows a boost

Comments

What’s my best solution for filling in sparse eyebrows? I was born with barely any, and wish for ones like Brooke Shields has.
Technique is important, but don’t fret—enhancing your brows is simpler than you think. Brush your brows upwards then outward to settle rogue hairs. Then, pick a colour: it’s best to go darker than your natural hair colour, and if you’re grey, look for dark blonde or heather, but avoid anything with a red undertone. When choosing an eyebrow pencil, you want one that draws easily on the back of your hand. You can also opt for a felt-tip, like Urban Decay Urban Brow Precision Tip Brow Tint ($24, sephora.com), which will help you avoid blunt lines and messy pencil shavings. The third option—and the one most commonly used by makeup artists—is eye shadow applied with a slanted eyeliner brush. This technique will add volume, because powder is more malleable and easy to blend, and is your best bet in terms of finding the perfect colour match. For the Marc Jacobs Spring 2012 show, François Nars used the Nars Pandora Duo Eye Shadow ($38, narscosmetics.ca) and, though the palette contains a matte black and shimmering white, the models’ brows looked strong and defined, not fake. Feel free to use a dark and light brown instead, but don’t shy away from colour that looks bold because, believe us, powder is blendable.

Afternoon beauty fix: Thicken brows while avoiding an overly filled in look

Comments

My eyebrows are too fair and sparse to frame my face, but every powder, gel, or pencil I try seems to look too severe. Am I picking the wrong products, or am I truly out of options?
The challenge is to find a hue that matches your natural hair but that’s one to two shades darker, along with an applicator that will be your brows’ friend, not foe. Pencils get dull and can draw on too thick, and gels take concentrated effort to avoid them looking cake-y. Hues made to match fair hair can often can skew red or ash grey so, needless to say, we understand your dilemma—but you’re not out of options yet! Urbanbrow Precision-Tip Brow Tint by Urban Decay ($24, at Sephora and select Shoppers Drug Mart locations) comes in two “universal” tints, “Blonde” and “Brunette,” with an ultra fine–tipped applicator to shape brows with feather-light precision. “Blonde” is super light and ideal for the fairest brows or those that need just a subtle filling in, and “Brunette” suits every single brow in between.

Put your eyebrows in capable hands at the Bombay Brow Bar.

India is one of those amazing, far-off lands I have yet to visit, but in the meantime, at least we’re not completely deprived of South Asian delights. I recently headed to Yaletown’s Bombay Brow Bar (1056 Mainland St., Vancouver, 604-683-BROW, bombaybrowbar.com), which recently hosted so-gorgeous-it-hurts Indian actress Freida Pinto during a break from shooting Rise of the Apes.
