Rose does Joe Fresh! Michelle loves bright nails! Our 4 beauty picks from the Screen Actors Guild Awards

Comments

It seemed like many were playing it safe on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend. The dresses were pretty, but there was nothing overtly jaw-dropping, and in terms of beauty the trend seemed to lean towards keeping it simple. Dare we say that the stars (and their stylists!) are holding back until the Oscars? We’ll have to wait until February 26 to find out. But until then, here are four looks that managed to stand out:

Rose Byrne does Joe Fresh! »
Michelle Williams’ bright nails! »
Ashlee Simpson’s short and sculpted hair! »

Afternoon beauty fix: Quick tips for getting the perfect wingtip

Comments

I could spend my whole life trying to draw a wingtip line and never get it right. Is there a liner out there that will make it easier?
Drawing a clean, precise line requires practice, a steady hand, and the right eyeliner consistency. We prefer a liquid liner with a felt-tip wand because it slides easily over the lid and distributes the ideal amount of pigment. Starting at the centre of your lid, press the tip directly on top of your lashes and draw a single line that extends beyond the outer corner of your eye. Use tiny strokes to fill in any gaps between individual lashes. Worry less about having a straight line, and more about ensuring that no spaces are left uncoloured. The ’60s-style flick is created by filling the tiny gap between your lower and upper lashes with a second line, and then connecting it to the first. Black liner is classic, but we’re loving the greasy metallic lustre of Pure Color Liquid EyeLiner in by Estée Lauder ($25, limited edition at Holt Renfrew and select Bay stores across Canada) because it marries two of our favourite fall trends: metallic eyes and graphic liner.

Afternoon beauty fix: Relieve red, puffy allergy-prone eyes

Comments

I’m seriously suffering from allergies this summer. How can I relieve my red, puffy eyes?
So long as flowers are in bloom and the wind continues to blow, your eyes run the risk of looking dry, puffy and fatigued. Even worse, the irritation makes wearing makeup almost impossible. Defend your eye area—and your ability to wear mascara—with a treatment that will soothe and hydrate your skin in the face of inflammation. We like Myfaceworks Revitalizing Eye ($35 for a box of 6, myfaceworks.com), because each silk-fabric mask is soaked in a tray of extracts to repair and prevent damage, plus it contains sodium hyaluronate to help smoothe out tiny wrinkles. Apply to clean skin for 15 to 20 minutes after cleansing or cutting the lawn.
