Nail Corner: Try Fall’s burgundy lipstick trend today… by painting tiny lips on your nails!

Comments

From lips to nails, shades of burgundy were all over the Fall 2012 runways—and, because stars are always the first to embrace a trend, the deep red lip has now dominated red carpets. Camilla Belle and Lana Del Rey both wore the colour at the Met Gala, Katy Perry can’t stop matching her just-dyed indigo hair with her lipstick, and even Jennifer Lopez is a fan of the vampy look. Of course, Nail Corner wanted to take the trend a step further: why just paint your lips and nails a shade of burgundy when you can actually paint tiny lips on your nails?

Check out 40 shots from H&M’s upcoming fall collection (Bedazzled sweaters and floral prints inside!)

Yesterday, we hit H&M’s Toronto headquarters for a sneak peek at what the brand is cooking up for fall. As it turns out, they’re not quite cooking: they’re bedazzling. Everything. Gold and crystal baubles adorn sweaters, skirts, heck, even a harness. Meanwhile, Erdem-esque floral digi prints show up on sweaters and leggings, layers are long and lean and the heels are of the need-it-now variety. This collection will begin to hit stores in July, but in the meantime, have a look at some of the items you’ll be fighting to get your hands on.

Vancouver’s Eco Fashion Week kicks off with stellar collections and re-styled Value Village wears

Mother Nature clearly approved of the kick-off to the Fall 2012 edition of Eco Fashion Week. She gave a long, wet, chillier-than-usual Vancouver winter its first dry spring high of 16 degrees. The runway, set atop an iceless 2010 Olympiad legacy rink in Robson Square, warmed up with a show featuring no new clothing.

It was stylists, not designers who took centre stage using some $500 worth of pre-loved Value Village finds. Sarah La Greca and Deanna Palkowski styled 21 waste-not, wide-ranging looks from pastel-on-pastel and print-on-print to ‘70s rock and ‘80s glam sent out to a Grimes soundtrack. My favourite: a Chinoiserie smoking jacket that wouldn’t have been out of place in Jason Wu’s fall collection, followed by a Cher Horowitz-esque pastel blue pleather jacket worn over a ladylike ivory ensemble—albeit more spring than fall—and a double scoop of polka dots on a blouse and pencil skirt.

In the final days of Toronto Fashion Week, one thing was starting to become very apparent: deep red nails are going to be huge for fall. Chloé Comme Parris and Pink Tartan both used the same maroon Essie shade—“Wicked”—and similar colours had been popping up at international shows all season, including Ferragamo, Jenny Packham and Bill Blass. Rachel Roy leaned towards an aubergine-tinted red, while Yigal Azrouel dubbed his shade of choice “pinot noir.” At L.A.M.B., burgundy polish covered just the moon, leaving the rest of the nail bare. And where red appears, gold seems to follow: the Toronto shows for Jeremy Laing and Ruffian paired both colours on the same nail, whereas Marchesa alternated all-burgundy (Deborah Lippmann’s “Single Ladies”) and all-gold manicures down the runway.

Clean, simple and slightly androgynous was the idea for hair and makeup at Jeremy Laing. “It’s masculine, but with feminine tones to contrast the gender-bender look,” explained CoverGirl makeup pro Greg Wencel. Eyebrows were defined with a brow pencil, but the desired effect was for a full, soft brow—not a harsh or bold statement. Eyes were equally soft, with a light wash of CoverGirl Intense ShadowBlast in “Beige Blaze” and a dusting of warm eyeshadow on top. In a very Downton Abbey sort of move, no mascara was applied—this further impressed the idea of a masculine, androgynous look. Read more »

One of the biggest challenges with The ShOws is the beauty: because the designers have already presented their Fall 2012 collections elsewhere, hair and makeup has to take inspiration from what was previously done. However, there’s always room for adaptations and change—which was certainly the case at Jean-Pierre Braganza’s show. “He wanted a smaller version of the hair,” explained Justin German, Pantene’s consulting stylist of the loose pompadour style. “There was trouble getting the clothes on over the hair in London!” Read more »
