From Rihanna to Daft Punk: How musicians are keeping fashion collaborations interesting

Musicans Fashion Collaborations

When it comes to collaborations, it seems like we’ve seen it all. The over-saturation of these fast fashion moments hardly allows us enough time to digest one limited-edition collection before our attention is pushed towards another. We’d say we were over the thrill, but that would probably be a lie. Especially with the refreshingly new kind of collaboration starting to emerge: that of the designer/musician collab. Though the musician half of the partnership rarely has experience in the fashion industry, there is something incredibly exciting about these strategic alliances. When the worlds of fashion and music collide, as we’ve seen happen with Beyonce’s latest collection for H&M, the media buzz is unbeatable. Designers and musicians tend to identify each other’s creative values, so why not work together?

Fashion favourite Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris has traded in models for musicians with the Saint Laurent Music Project, a portrait series inspired by the relationship between music and classic YSL. French duo Daft Punk, who mixed Slimane’s spring womenswear runway soundtrack, is the latest addition to the series. The designer also shot the dapper set’s June 2013 cover for Dazed & Confused. Slimane reaffirmed his ability to mold contemporary music through his recent collaboration with Canadian mixstress of the moment, Claire Boucher aka. Grimes. The two recently produced a collection of illustrated men’s T-shirts, influence by vintage YSL love posters. Grimes, who doubles as a talented illustrator, inked the five T-shirt designs herself (they’re currently available on ssense.com).

Rodarte may or may not be teaming up with Dakota and Elle Fanning

Comments

Rodarte Dakotta Fanning Elle Fanning

How much did we adore the Fanning sisters’ gowns at the Met Gala last Monday? We loved the winged back, the sheer panels and the tie-dye. We loved it all. Well, rumour has it 19-year-old Dakota and 15-year-old Elle Fanning may be heading to the drawing board and teaming up to work with Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

We love a good collab and when two sisters pair up with two sisters, it is mind blowing. They haven’t hit their 20s and the sisters already have designer campaigns like Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu under their respective belts. Dakota even once stated how much her little sister Elle appreciates fashion: “Elle knows every single model, every single collection, every single piece from every single collection… She has a real passion, and it’s not at all in a materialistic way. She genuinely appreciates the workmanship and creativity.” So it’s no surprise to see this superstar pair wishing to cross over to the other side to input some of their ideas into the design. And according to a fashion mole at Daily Mail, the Fanning sisters were quite “hands on” in designing their stunning Met Gala dresses last Monday.

Though a Rodarte rep has already stepped forward to squash the rumours, we’re still holding out hope. This kind of thing has been denied into reality before. Let’s cross those fingers.

The best of [FAT]: We recap Toronto’s Arts & Fashion Week with the 5 talents we predict will be making waves

The Best of FAT Fall 2013

A glittering look from YDNA. Photography by Jason Hargrove.

Is it just me, or are we all still recovering from the whirlwind that is fashion month? From constantly refreshing the home pages of my favorite fashion sites to trekking down to the tents of David Pecaut Square for Toronto’s own collections, it seems that this so-called “month” is years long! Before we close our books on the Fall 2013 collections season, there is one more week to get excited about in Toronto–that is of course–[FAT] Arts & Fashion Week which took place last week in a beautiful warehouse in the up-and-coming arts neighborhood off Sterling Road in the west end.

Industry insiders, fashion fans and fellow designers all piled in to check out the burgeoning talent coming out of Toronto, Montreal and new partners Focus Mexico in a week-long extravaganza of runway shows, photography exhibits (Toronto ex-pat Hannah Sider‘s portraits were stand out), art installations, live performances and fashion films (a particular favorite from the always incredible Diego Armand at Perfecto Magazine)

Founder Vanja Vasic first put together an alternative fashion week while a student in Ryerson University’s Fashion Design program. I remember attending one of the first presentations, as my big sis happened to be showing alongside Vasic and her fellow students. The evening was a haphazard collection of musical performances, runway shows and modern dance–needless to say, FAT has come a long way since then.

Attending shows at Arts & Fashion Week reminds me why I love fashion. Vasic and her colleagues have created an incredible platform for unknown designers to present their collections in front of the fashion community, media outlets and supporters. I’ll admit to getting a bit misty-eyed as a group of high-school and first-year university students presented their designs as part of PACT Fashion, an organization founded by Make Den owner Irene Stickney which gives under-privileged youths practical skills and creative outlets. It’s organizations like PACT that make FAT what it is today–a community of creative minds working together to make fashion and design accessible to those who otherwise are forced to sit on the sidelines.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite collections from the week.

Karl Lagerfeld commemorates Chanel’s 100th anniversary with a short film starring Keira Knightley

Comments

Honestly, what can’t Uncle Karl do?

With perfume campaigns that already take the characteristics of films and several short films under his belt so far; it is only a matter of time before Karl Lagerfeld takes on the role as writer and director of an full length film. (Watch out, Tom Ford!) In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Coco Chanel’s first boutique in Deauville, Lagerfeld created Once Upon a Time, his latest short film commemorating the success of his late great predecessor.

Stepping out his usual model-only short film castings, Lagerfeld chose Keira Knightley to play the iconic role of Chanel herself alongside French actress Clotilde Hesme as Adrienne, Gabrielle’s aunt and a slew of models who play the rest of Chanel’s crew (Jamie Bochert as Marchesa Luisa Casati is sure to thrill). Stella Tennant, Lindsey Wixon and Chanel devotee Amanda Harlech have special roles in the film as well, in which we are whisked away to the early days of Gabrielle Chanel’s first boutique circa 1913.

Back in December 2011, fashion legend Valentino Garavani launched the first ever 3D fashion museum focusing on his five-decade couture and ready-to-wear career. Allowing anyone with internet connection to be immersed in the history of the design house with thousands of images of sketches, illustrations, advertising campaigns, editorials, fashion show videos and red carpet pictures, the site has now added an editorial slant.

Each month, the website will feature “Valentino’s Words,” personal, hand-written notes from the designer himself, as well as “Mr. Blasberg’s Questionnaire” in which society and fashion writer Derek Blasberg will invite Valentino muses, industry insiders and fashion icons to answer a series of personal questions about their insights on fashion and life in the fashion lane.

To kick it all off, Academy Award nominee Hugh Jackman is featured as Blasberg’s first interviewee. On a more visual level, Carlos Souza, longtime Valentino ambassador and fashion industry insider, takes viewers behind the scenes of the Valentino brand via his “Instaglams” (@ValentinoInstaglams), where he’ll be capturing the glamour of Valentino’s monthly happenings.

Goodbye Chloé Comme Parris, hello Beaufille!

Chloe Comme Parris Beaufille

It’s likely that if you live in Toronto, have any semblance of interest in the fashion industry, you have at least heard murmurs of the talented sister designer duo Chloé and Parris Gordon. Their most recent Fall 2013 collection was received with serious accolades from major fashion editors, giving the 1990s grunge trend a kick with a collection that Courtney Love would definitely rock alongside her Saint Laurent wardrobe. Formerly dubbed Chloé Comme Parris, the pair unveiled an exciting new era for their brand, announcing a surprising name change. Bye bye CCP, hello Beaufille!

Loosely translated as “handsome girl,” the designers’ new monicker encapsulates the androgynous, badass aesthetic that the girls have honed since debuting at Toronto Fashion Week with their Fall 2011 collection. Since then, Chloé (the tomboy of the team who focuses on textiles and garments) and Parris (who crafts the duo’s covetable jewellery and accessories) have continued to impress season after season, solidifying their spot as the go-to local designer for the young fashion set aiming to marry a bit of punk rock with a subtle sensuality. Chloé and Parris emphasize that Beaufille may not be for every woman. “It’s for a specific girl who has an eye for details and construction; something unique and artistic.”

The Gordon sisters have been keeping busy since showing at Toronto Fashion Week last month. The pair debuted an exciting new collaboration, Littledoe x Beaufille alongside Toronto-born accessories designer Chase Cohl (daughter of former Rolling Stones tour manager Michael Cohl) with a celeb-studded bash at Bar Marmont in LA last week, attracting the likes of Gossip Girl Jessica Szhor, fellow celeb-daughter Dakota Johnson (daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) and the infectiously hilarious Brit Lucy Punch. The collection combines the two brand’s festival-chic aesthetic into a capsule collection which includes printed silk suits, lace minidresses, wide brim hats adorned with edgy chain-detailing and some sick new jewels with an emphasis on rough-hewn diamonds (their diamond rings even double as guitar slides—say whaaa??) Though there are no concrete plans for future collaborations, working with like-minded designers will definitely be an important part of Beaufille’s future. And after this successful first-try, who knows might be hopping on board.

Holt Renfrew Armani blanket Free The Children

With Mother’s Day only few weeks away, Giorgio Armani and Holt Renfrew have teamed up to launch a limited edition baby blanket in support of Free the Children, the international charity that supports millions of children and families around the world in developing communities. Exclusively designed for Holt Renfrew, it will be sold for a limited time only and proceeds of the $50 blanket will go towards benefiting Free the Children’s international developing communities in Kenya, supporting Maasai mamas and their babies through the first year of the baby’s life with the provisions of necessary healthcare, clean water, and needed support. Contributions from purchasing of the blanket will help Holt Renfrew in reaching its goal to raise $100,000 in support for the organization.

Christian Lacroix to design a couture collection for Schiaparelli: What can we expect?

Christian Lacroix to design for Schiaparelli

The year of Schiaparelli speculation has finally culminated with today’s announcement that Christian Lacroix will show a one-off couture collection for the brand this July. “Elsa is a sacred sphinx who will never cease to make us question things, all the while offering new puzzles by way of answers. My wish is to reinstate her at the centre of her fashion house and on the stage through which she seduced the world,” he told French news magazine L’Express today. For all those who were a little more than miffed over his own line’s demise in 2009, this might just be that match in designer heaven we can all agree on.

Known for his penchant for pure extravagance, Lacroix was long lauded as a titan of Paris Couture since his debut collection in 1987, though he was never quite able to capture ready-to-wear sustainability despite his many diffusion lines, prominence in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and long-time cultural association with Absolutely Fabulous.
