They said/We said: More on the phenom that is New York Magazine’s latest cover boy, Andrej Pejic

Comments

New York Magazine’s biannual fashion issue has arrived, and with it came an encouraging industry-wide frenzy about cover model Andrej Pejic. This time around, Pejic is not only receiving attention for his looks but also for what he has to say. It’s kind of momentous, as if a star was born—one that, as Pejic puts it himself, doesn’t get out of bed for less that $50 a day. (A far and ironic cry from Linda Evangelista’s famed similar claim about her $10,000 minimum.)

The androgynous model has been on a rapid rise to fame since Sarah Doukas started marketing him as a woman, Carine Roitfeld styled him in Fendi, and he walked Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway. He embraces his gender-blending look, saying, “It’s not like, ‘Okay, today I want to look like a man, or today I want to look like a woman’; I want to look like me. It just so happens that some of the things I like are feminine.”

What seems to have struck readers positively is Pejic’s amusing personality. He relieves tension with punch lines like, “My whole life is controversy. What can I do? I’m like Britney Spears!” He’s surprisingly hilarious and confident—not to mention, successful—for a 19-year-old.

Pejic is no stranger to controversy. In May, FHM ran a story online that referred to Pejic as a “thing” and later took it down. In the same month, Pejic covered Dossier shirtless, and the magazine got censored at both Barnes & Noble and Borders. So, does the praise Pejic is receiving from New York Magazine mean the mainstream is ready to embrace him as an icon? We’ll have to wait and see. But if his career takes a turn for the worse, he’ll tell you, “I’ll come back with a sex tape…I’d bring in latex, make it really fashion, really artsy.”

They said/We said: Remembering fashion icon Amy Winehouse

Comments

Album Art from Winehouse's Back to Black Album

In dreadfully sad news, Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home on Saturday. The “Rehab” singer was known for her drug abuse and alcoholism, and at times it outshone her exceptional talent. Despite her self-destructive behaviour, Winehouse’s death came as a shock to many. Though family, friends and fans may have known she was in trouble, no one expected her bad habits to catch up with her so quickly. Winehouse died at the age of 27 like fellow musicians Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison.

Winehouse will be remembered not only for her soulful music but also as a fashion icon. Her eclectic vintage-inspired style and signature beehive quickly transitioned to the runway and magazine pages. The singer was a muse to Karl Lagerfeld, who styled models for a Chanel fashion show with her signature thick eyeliner and beehives. Although Winehouse claimed to be clueless about fashion, her influence was felt throughout the industry.

In death, we hope the Grammy winner will be remembered more for her significant contributions to music, fashion and pop culture than for her troubles. Amy Winehouse will be missed but her legacy will live on.

They said/We said: We weigh in on Anja Rubik’s mullet wedding dress

Comments

Photography via Fashionologie

Anja Rubik has joined the ranks of Natasha Poly, Lily Aldridge and Kate Moss as the newest wedded supermodel. The face of Fendi married her fiancé and fellow model Sasha Knezevic this past Saturday (and to think we were busy watching TV!) at a church in Deià on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The couple was blessed with a picture-perfect day—in addition to their genetic superiority—which helped make the day look like a high-end campaign rather than a real-life wedding.

The only potential crimp in the picture? Rubik’s custom-made Peter Dundas dress, which struck some as mullet-esque. In somewhat of a shocking reveal, the hemline was (super) short in the front and drew out into a long, layered train. We’re guessing her thought process went something like, “Just look at these legs.” Belted at the waist and fuller in the bottom, the white silk was a perfect contrast to Rubik’s dark tan. The model’s upper back was covered with lace, which came together with a bow at her neck.

But back to that mullet. For some, wedding gowns are best as classic, simple pieces. But to be fair, Rubik was staying true to her own taste with a touch of bohemian and rock ‘n’ roll. The dress had both Rubik and Dundas written all over it, whether the critics liked it or not.

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Gucci Gucci” by Kreayshawn

Comments

Whether you like it or not, there’s no doubt that you’ll be hearing California native, 21-year-old Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” all summer long. Her video for this addictive track has already garnered more than 1.5 million YouTube hits, tagging her as the next internet music sensation and sparking rumours of a million-dollar record deal with Sony. For those of you wondering if this is just a big joke, the pixie-sized rapper has cred to her name—she shot music videos for the BasedGod Lil B (among others) and is friends with members of Odd Future (Left Brain and Jasper appear in the “Gucci Gucci” video). Take a look and get acquainted with what will inevitably be a part of your summer soundtrack this year. Everybody now, “Gucci, Gucci, Louis, Louis, Fendi, Fendi, Prada…”
