Afternoon beauty fix: Dry, flaky skin fighting with your foundation?

Comments

My flaky and dry skin is causing my foundation to look awful. How can fix my face so makeup looks nice again?
No foundation, no matter how hydrating it may be, will look its best when worn over skin suffering from deterioration. To get your skin smooth and primed to retain moisture, try using a buffing tool during the face-washing portion of your regular routine. Read more »

Afternoon beauty fix: Clearing up a debate on the causes of clear skin

Comments

A friend of mine insists her clear skin is from never wearing foundation. Is this the truth and, if so, should I stop using it?
Likely, no. There are many other factors at play—such as hormones, genetics, environmental surroundings, and diet—that would affect your skin more than eight hours of foundation wear. Plus, it sounds like her hypothesis may have come from an aged textbook—foundations can now be argued more helpful than harmful thanks to SPF protection, lightweight pigments, and dermatologist-tested formulas. Maybelline FIT Me Foundation ($10, at drugstores) possesses all of the above plus a super-intelligent technology that blends pigments perfectly with your skin, so you can prove your friend wrong without the use of smoke and mirrors.

Afternoon beauty fix: Attack wrinkles and pimples all at once!

Comments

I’ve started to notice fine lines around my eyes and mouth, which is weird because my combination/oily skin still breaks out from time to time. Is there a foundation that will cover pimples and reverse wrinkles?
Let me first address your comment that it seems “weird” to age and suffer from acne at the same time. It’s probably more common than you think. In fact, both your wrinkles and pimples may have been born from the same cause: dehydration. You can’t avoid the aging process by drinking more water, but you might slow it down and break out less frequently by maintaining an ideal level of hydration in your system. Relying on glasses of water alone is an inefficient way to hydrate your skin because, let’s be honest, it takes a long time for the water to reach the surface. You’d be smart to hydrate skin from the outside with Stila‘s Perfect & Correct Foundation ($57, at Murale, Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques) because not only does it automatically colour-match to your skin, but it’s also packed with super-hydrating hyaluronic acid and a unique mineral complex to control oil, diminish wrinkles, and reduce imperfections too.

Afternoon beauty fix: Fake the no-makeup look

Comments

Is there a trick to achieving the no-makeup look with… makeup?
Looking natural is all about selecting products with pigments and textures that blend perfectly into your skin with a hint of enhancement. Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy ($11, at drugstores) features products that work according to your skin’s needs. Darkened eyelids? No problem. The Fast Fix Eye Shadow Base will even out your skin tone with a non-greasy (and non-creasy!) nudeness like no concealer can.

Lush-ious tints for summer skin

Comments

photography by Kira Crugnale

Foundation is something I cannot live without. My olive skintone is an eclectic assortment of browns and yellows, so complexion perfecting is a ritual. While I aim to get as close as possible to the airbrushed version of my skin, come summer, the hoards of tinted moisturizers I’ve tried just don’t cut it. As the days heat up, my full face of makeup slowly melts off through the day—a problem I never encountered in my native Britain. Even mattifying primers don’t cement it on, so you can imagine my joy at having finally found an answer. Read more »

What do you think of these high-fashion Mickey Mouse ears (adorned by House of Holland, Giles, et. al.)? We love the spiked pair, even though they might look a bit out of place at a theme park. [Refinery 29]
