Daily Steal

The daily steal: Chambray shirt, $20

Photography by Carlo Mendoza

I haven’t worn a chambray top since the ’90s, when it was called a “jean shirt” and I borrowed it from my mom. But the light, denim-like fabric is fresh again, making an appearance on Chloé’s and D&G’s spring runways. Read the rest of this entry »

The Jil Sander collection for Uniqlo was welcomed with such open arms that the designer is collaborating on a second collection for the Japanese brand. It’s set to launch for Spring 2010.  Also on her second lap, Stella McCartney for Gap Kids, with a collection also in the works for spring.  [Fashionista]

In celebrity-turned-designer news, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe is collaborating with Maison Martin Margiela. The musician’s single piece is a sterling silver microcassette on an unraveling tape chain. The accessory can be worn as a bracelet, necklace, or belt, to name a few plausible suggestions. Only 199 will be available at Maison Martin Margiela boutiques. Lady Gaga has been named the new face of M.A.C’s AIDS Fund campaign. But she didn’t even show her face last night at the Accessories Council’s ACE awards, where she hid behind a netted lace headpiece.  We can tell it’s you from a mile away, Gaga. [The Cut]

Gisele Bündchen is on her way to becoming a fully licensed pilot as well as a new mommy. Next week she’ll take her in-air test—doesn’t the baby bump get in the way? [People]

Fashion news: Ruffian line hits Anthropologie, DWTS rejects Vera Wang designs and more

The new line Mise en Scene by Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais has hit Anthropologie. The lower-priced collection of clothing and home décor was inspired by starlet dressing rooms in films like All About Eve and Stage Fright. The classic Ruffian style of sharp tailoring and classic, elegant fabrics are still there, but for a price that (probably) won’t give you buyer’s remorse. [Racked]

Vera Wang opted out of Dancing with the Stars but not because she can’t dance. Apparently ABC refused to let Vera Wang design her own costumes for the show. You just don’t do that. [FWD]

Fashion news: Gap founder dies, a curious menswear movement and a raft of designer collabs

Donald G. Fisher, co-founder of the Gap, has died from cancer at the age of 81. Fisher and his wife Doris opened the first store of the retail chain in San Francisco in 1969 following their inability to find jeans that fit properly. [NYTimes]

A new wave of masculinity has arrived: the mantyhose. Selfridges’ tights for men by lingerie brand Unconditional are available in black, beige and charcoal. Menswear director David Walker-Smith calls them “extremely versatile,” going on to say, “we expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement.” [The Cut] What do you think of the mantyhose movement? Is it the ultimate in Shakespearean-inspired fashion or far too feminine for the modern man?

Khakis cool? Alexander Wang says so. The designer is one of a trio of promising names who have created pieces for the third round of Design Editions, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s partnership with Gap. Wang, winner of the 2008 prize, joins the runners-up, Brooklyn’s Vena Cava and milliner Albertus Swanepoel, in cooking up micro collections in that Gap holy of holies.
