Meryl! Rooney! Michelle! We dress our favourite Oscar nominees in the best dresses from the Pre-Fall and Couture collections

It’s that time again! Oscar has spoken, and the nominations are in. Although we would’ve liked to see Tilda Swinton, Elizabeth Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Shailene Woodley, and Charlize Theron be part of the Best Actress hoopla, it’s probably on Meryl lock anyway. We combed the Pre-Fall collections (with one couture exception) and plucked the gowns we think Oscar’s Best Actress nominees should consider for February 26. Let the countdown begin!

PFW diary: Our top picks from Stella McCartney, Giambattista Valli, Vanessa Bruno, Emanuel Ungaro, Chloé, and Yves Saint Laurent

Stella McCartney shot by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/WireImage

With a thriving ready-to-wear brand, several collaboration projects on the go, four kids, a dashing hubby (publisher Alasdhair Willis) and an icon for a Dad (Sir Paul!) it’s little wonder we bow down to Stella McCartney. Who doesn’t want to be a Stella girl? She’s effortlessly chic but not perfectly turned out; she is a minimalist but has a playful side; she is confident and a great confidante. In the modeling world a Stella girl looks like Miranda Kerr, Natasha Poly, Natalia Vodianova, or Anja Rubik, fitting given that they all walked in McCartney’s Spring 2012 show. And what a show it was: crisp white jackets with mesh inserts, Baroque-inspired embellishment, a shockwave of royal blue, tunics with side slits (a big theme this week), casual pieces in a graphic wave motif reminiscent of silk pajamas, paisley (welcome back!), one-shouldered dresses, onyx-white clutches, sporty flatforms, and quilted shoulder bags tied in a bow.

Growing up Gomez: Selena Gomez is leaving the kiddie shows behind and moving on to more adult pursuits

Selena Gomez

By Dennis Hensley

On her new album, When the Sun Goes Down, Selena Gomez sings about self-acceptance (“Who Says”), infatuation (“Whiplash,” which Britney Spears co-wrote) and taming a misbehaving guy (“That’s More Like It,” co-written by Katy Perry). Yet when asked which track reveals the most about her, Gomez ditches the hearts and flowers and goes right for the jugular. “‘Bang Bang Bang’ is probably the most personal,” she says, referring to a snarky kiss-off anthem directed toward an ex, in which she coos put-downs like, “My new boy used to be a model…he looks way better than you” and “When I’m out having fun, you’re gonna be the one that’s broken.”

They said/We said: Giles Deacon splits from Ungaro, do we hear Vuitton in his future?

Comments

Photography by Peter Stigter

This morning, news broke that Giles Deacon is no longer working as creative director and leading designer at Ungaro. The story of the reported mutual breakup is being met with surprise, coming just weeks shy of Paris fashion week, and after only two collections (and two very well received collections at that) with the Parisian fashion house. The Spring 2012 line will be the last collab between Deacon and Ungaro, and is rumoured to not even have been designed by Deacon himself, but instead “reflect the work of the design team.”

Deacon was the latest in a long list of short-lived collaborations with the likes of Giambattista Valli, Peter Dundas, Esteban Cortazar and even Lindsay Lohan. His departure begs the question: is the brand stable?

Having such a tumultuous staff does not bode well, and with no replacement named, we will wait with baited breath to see what the future holds for the Ungaro name as well as its place within the industry.
