Sterling Cooper for sale: Buy one of Joan’s dresses, or perhaps Don Draper’s desk

Comments

Sterling Cooper‘s assets are being auctioned off a piece at a time, which would be sad, were it not a set for a fictional company and if we weren’t distracted by the fact that you can also buy one of Joan “Joanie” Harris’ famously Roger-attracting dresses. Pieces from the Mad Men set, office furniture mostly, are being auctioned off on eBay to benefit City of Hope, a L.A. County hospital focused on cancer treatment.

The daily steal: Breast cancer tee, $12

Comments

Joe Fresh Style has teamed up with Rethink Breast Cancer to create this year’s Canadian edition of the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer–with the famous target done in wine, berry and fuchsia. At $12, this not only qualifies as a steal, but a good deed, too. And for an extra $4, you can pick of a bottle of Joe’s matching nail polish, the proceeds from which also go back to the charity, to complete your stylishly charitable statement.

Todd Lynn is showing his fall collection in Toronto at Coco Rocha’s Strut for a Cure

When then 11-year-old Erika Campbell heard that her dad’s colleague was cycling across Canada in the annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, she wanted to put on a fashion show to help raise funds. Luckily she knew someone in the fashion biz–Campbell called her cousin Coco Rocha, who gathered 20 models from Elite agency (and 10 members of the local fire department) for a show at the Roxx nightclub in Barrie, Ontario. The now-annual event has become Strut for a Cure and its second year is coming to Toronto and throwing a blow-out party on May 27 at the Berkeley Church. FASHION is thrilled to be a presenting sponsor for the event, where every single dollar from ticket sales and donations is being given to the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation (coasttocoastagainstcancer.org).

So what’s in store? Jeanne Beker is playing emcee for the night and Rocha has again invited her friends from Elite to walk with her in a runway show, outfitted in London-based Canadian designer Todd Lynn‘s Fall 2010 collection. (Lynn will be there in person as well.) There will be DJs spinning throughout the event, but the headline act is Martina Sorbara and Dan Kurtz’s electropop outfit, Dragonette. The Juno Award-winning band has worked with Cyndi Lauper, they’re in the Lollapalooza lineup this summer, and they’ll no doubt deliver a fiery set at Strut for a Cure. The $95 ticket price also includes an open bar and nibblies. To pick up a ticket (they’ll go fast), visit strutforacure.com.

The daily steal: Soy candle, $44

Comments

Photography by Nettika Berthelot

Yeah, I know it costs more than I would spend on a dry-cleaning in a month, but let me explain. Juara’s pretty and lightly scented Hope Soy Candle ($44, beautymark.ca) burns for a ridiculously long time, emits smoke-free signals (thanks to being made from soy) and, here’s the best part, donates 10% of its proceeds to Walubi—a charitable relief organization providing emergency aid to disaster-stricken areas of Indonesia. With earthquakes and tsunami’s rattling our world every few months, it’s a small price to pay.

Affairs of the heart are top-of-mind this month, but on the eve of Valentine’s Day, you’ll have a chance to spread the love around a little at the second edition of Heartbeats for Africa, a fundraiser to help women and children in Africa who are living with HIV/AIDS. The art auction is the brainchild of sisters Alison and Kate Lawler-Dean, who work in public relations and art consulting, respectively, and were inspired to create the event after reading Stephanie Nolan’s 28: Stories of AIDS in Africa. (The first Heartbeats was held in 2008.) Read more »

The Indie Rock Coloring Book, and a T-shirt by Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear

The Indie Rock Coloring Book, and a T-shirt by Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear

Someday I know my collection of rock T-shirts will be worth money and now I can fuel my addiction (without having to deal with the club scene anymore) thanks to the Yellow Bird Project (yellowbirdproject.com). The Montreal-based non-profit that has some of the coolest indie bands of the day–Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear and the Dears to name a very few–create adorable tees ($25) that help charities selected by the musicians themselves. And if you know a little coolie person, be sure to buy the Indie Rock Coloring Book for a mere $10.

The daily steal: Charity: water bracelets, $5

Comments

FMsteal1209brace_lg

While you are running around all the post-Christmas sales, do take time out for a good deed.  Drop by a Miss Sixty/Energie (misssixty.com) boutique or outlet and pick up a charity: water bracelet for $5. A full 100 per cent of the purchase price goes to bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. One bracelet alone can give one person clean water for five years. Since September 2008, Sixty Group has donated more than US$20,000 to charity: water through various projects – enough to build four wells and bring clean, safe drinking water to more than 2,000 people.
