Baby’s first Lagerfeld: The Kaiser designs a doll

Comments

dec09readsprincesskarlHow is it possible that Karl Lagerfeld has so much free time on his hands? Aside from designing his own line and the multitude of Chanel collections, it seems like every other day the man releases some ancillary project. Does he never sleep?

Anyway, today’s announcement comes in the form of a princess doll created for Parisian toy shoppe Au Nain Bleu. Proceeds from the 220 euro doll will go to support the Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation, which helps fight social inequality through culture and education. There is also a 830 euro lace, silk and tulle girl’s dress that can be worn for some super-haute version of dress-up.

Frocktail hosts competitive shopping for a good cause

Photography by Jon Howcroft

The first annual Frocktail Party combined cocktails and competitive shopping, with all proceeds going to fund juvenile diabetes research. Held in Toronto this past Thursday, the sold-out event saw women showing up to bid on more than 80 pre-loved dresses and accessories, and men following in their wake to see the Shark Week behavior of the bidding babes.

While tastes varied, all Frocktailees agreed that with 100 per cent of the nights profits going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation—the night was organized by a group of young ladies who had seen their friend Vanessa Oliver deal with the daily realities of living with juvenile diabetes—there was no guilt involved in splurging. Bidding starts today on a cache of dresses that includes pieces from Canadian designers, a few international heavy-hitters and some sweet vintage finds. Toronto: Paul Hardy Spring 2010

PAUL HARDY Spring 2010. Photography by Angela Y. Martin

Imagine a pack of angels on their way to a workout. That was the image conjured by Calgary designer Paul Hardy’s ethereal collection for Spring 2010. Floating down the runway at LG Fashion Week were military jackets with veil-thin blouson hems, gauzy tunics over knit leggings, lace bloomers, cotton sack dresses and jackets patched together from what looked like bits of handmade paper. Decorative touches included lace jabots tied around necks and waists, and muslin crunched into giant corsages. The palette was all cream and white and as pure as Hardy’s intentions. Following a trip in Uganda in January 2009, the designer is developing privately-funded “green” sewing units that will provide women in East Africa with work. They will produce Hardy’s new Reversal of Fortune collection, a moderately-priced line incorporating recycled fabrics.  Revenue will help establish trust funds to educate African orphans. Sounds like Hardy deserves a pair of gauzy angel wings all his own.

Vancouver: Chantecaille helps cure our French envy

Comments

sept09chantecailleFrench women seem to have it all: elegance, effortless style, the ability to eat pan au chocolat, brie and crème fraiche and never gain a pound.  Sigh.

Here to solve some of our envy is luxury cosmetics and skin care brand Chantecaille, which just debuted at Vancouver’s Holt Renfrew (737 Dunsmuir St., 604-681-3121, holtrenfrew.com). They may be New York based, but their soul–and founder, Sylvie Chantecaille–is French. Read more »
