All-American. Spirited. Jetsetter. You can spot Michael Kors from a mile away. Over the course of his 30 years in the fashion industry, the man and the brand have become one and the same, morphing into a mega-empire that, as rumour has it, hit a billion dollars in sales this year. Not bad for a boy from Long Island, New York. Adored by Hollywood A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez, soccer moms and First Ladies alike (Michelle Obama wore Kors for her first official White House portrait), his rise to fashion royalty took off in 1981, when he launched his eponymous womenswear line.

Last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America held this year’s awards ceremony in New York. Marc Jacobs took home Womenswear Designer of the Year, while Marcus Wainwright and David Neville won the menswear award for their Rag & Bone label and Lucite lover Alexis Bittar took honors for Accessories Designer. For up-and-comers, the Swarovski Awards went to Jason Wu for womenswear, Richard Chai for menswear, and Alexander Wang for accessories. Dispatch from London: Dancing with the stars at Burberry

In New York, celebrities and other pretty young things are given the ultimate VIP treatment (think private areas at nightclubs and concerts, and multiple security guard escorts before and after fashion shows). As I look around me at the Burberry Prorsum after party, held at Burberry headquarters on Horseferry Road, I realize that is not quite the case in London. To my left? Mary-Kate Olsen. To my right? Emma Watson, the face of Burberry’s fall/winter ad campaign. Yes, we are all bouncing around together to the music of The Kooks, who have arrived to do a live set (the lead singer makes sure to thank “Christopher.” Could that be Christopher Bailey, I wonder?!).
