Dashing off to Paris for the weekend to get your hair done not an option? Don’t fret—we just discovered something that will make you feel like you’re at a salon in le Marais. Cut by Fred is a beauty blog by French hairstylist Frédéric Birault, who made a career styling hair on fashion shoots, film sets, and for chanteuses like Vanessa Paradis. The blog is home to dozens of dreamy Instagram-ish video tutorials of Birault styling the hair of friends and clients, with him murmuring directions as pop songs play in the background. We don’t speak French fluently, but imagine the narrative goes something like this: “Now, I caress my hand up the back of your neck and whisper ‘I love you’ in your ear, and place a bobby pin there. And another. And another. It’s so simple. Here, take my hand…” Read more »

Every time I attempt to style my hair in an interesting way it backfires—I either look like a prom queen or my hair becomes way too greasy from all the product I use. What can I do differently?
The most covetable styles this year are those with natural movement and a high-calibre shine. Think: big, bouncy curls or a tidy, tight ballerina bun. As for your dilemma, have you ever tried using a set of curlers? We swear they’re not just for your grandma—they actually offer a super easy way to get curls that last and bounce with ease. We love Kevin Murphy Hair Curlers ($36, kevinmurphy.com.au), because they’re riddled with holes for hot air to pass through, meaning the heat from your dryer can mold your hair into waves without the use of much product at all. Begin by spritzing Kérastase Chroma Cristal Shine Perfecting Mist ($42, kerastase.com) onto damp hair—it’s a water-based gel that gives your hair lots of shine. Then, create a centre part, wrap small sections of hair around each curler, and wait until your hair is completely dry. If you’re able to, sleep with them in to set your waves in stone (not literally, of course!) making them super long-lasting. If time’s not on your side, blow your hair dry to speed up the process and follow with a flexi hairspray, like Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($24, moroccanoil.com), to keep curls soft and looking radiant, not greasy or wet.

Rachel McAdams’ hair looked so very pretty at the Los Angeles premiere of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Yes, there are dozens and dozens of ways to properly describe this updo, but “pretty” just about sums it up, right? It has a little bit of the perfectly messy, loose tease that was on the runway for Louis Vuitton Spring 2012 (otherwise known as: what happens only when you pull back your hair and are not trying) with enough volume through the crown to keep it modern and youthful. At the back, there’s a series of twisted buns that start at the middle of McAdams’ head and work down to almost the base of her neck. Read more »

1. Is this colour finally it? Since tweeting way back in July that it was going to take many weeks (and dye jobs) to achieve her next choice of hair colour, Katy Perry has gone from black to badly bleached blonde to Manic Panic pink. Is this pastel peachy-pink hair she debuted at Saturday’s Change Begins Within Benefit Celebration in Los Angeles the final shade, or just another stage of Perry’s ever-evolving hair colour? Jennifer Morrison photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage. Valentino Spring 2012 photo by Peter Stigter.
Though she has yet to be styled in a fairytale ensemble for an episode of Once Upon A Time, Jennifer Morrison delivered a very medieval-come-modern look on her own at this weekend’s The Muppets movie premiere. The braided style is undoubtedly inspired by Valentino’s Spring 2012 runway, though Morrison’s version is not nearly as complicated. It’s actually unfair for us to position them side-by-side, because it’s hard for anyone, actress or not, to trump the perfect ethereal beauty of the Valentino braid. Read more »

Ombré, ombré, ombré! This hair-colour technique is slowly moving away from being just a fad and becoming a long-haul trend. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that all hair stylists have mastered how to properly do an ombré dye job. Case(s) in point: Drew Barrymore and Audrina Patridge. Both were snapped this week with dark-to-light tresses, and we can’t say we approve of either.
Patridge, at the Immortals 3D premiere in Los Angeles, doesn’t even seem to have hit the dye bottle—it looks like the former Hills star simply swapped her brown extensions for blonde. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope that this quickie approach to ombré doesn’t catch on.
Then there’s Barrymore, who is usually so good at switching hair colours. So we’re going to assume the brassy ombré style she debuted at the LACMA Art + Film Gala is actually still in transition—because there is no excuse for bleaching the bottom half of jet-black hair and not toning it to a proper shade. None.
Do you think either of these stars looks good with her new hair? »

Ever since their invention, cellphones and computer hard drives have been shedding their clunky forms as if mimicking Bill Gates’s eyewear evolution from giant geek frames to rimless spectacles. But it took a diy movement to kick-start the same downsizing in the beauty world, allowing popular in-office technology to come home with us. We were able to take matters such as hair removal and wrinkle fighting into our own hands when IPL (intense pulsed light) and led (light-emitting diodes) were incorporated into handheld devices we could use ourselves. That meant zero downtime for us and our bank accounts. Here, a look at 2.0 versions of trusted favourites, as well as some new tools to add to your workbench.
