Bring a little beauty to Day of the Dead

Halloween might be over, but there’s still good reason to do something special with your beauty routine this morning: November 2 is Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead—the Mexican holiday that celebrates the departed. Bright flowers, sugar skulls, and colourful costumed skeletons are all iconic symbols of this holiday, and are gaining traction across mainstream culture. Both Elettra Wiedemann and Debra Messing showed up at the Hulaween Benefit Gala this weekend dressed like a skeleton à la Day of the Dead. Of course, not every office will appreciate a full painted-skull get up on your face, so here’s a few subtle ways to adjust your look.

Vote: Which celebrity Halloween costume is your favourite?

Comments

They’re just like us! Hollywood’s and fashion’s best were out over the weekend and last night celebrating Halloween in Marvel, Disney, and trash TV style. Despite some lacklustre outings from the likes of Lindsay Lohan (what else is new?) and Paris Hilton, who all gave it the ole “I just want to be sexy” college try, we picked our 6 favourites. So, who takes the cake?

Vote: Do you like Kim Kardashian as a redhead?

Comments

Reality star Kim Kardashian showed off a new hairstyle this weekend: bright bright red. Okay, the titian tint was temporary—a necessary part of the star’s Poison Ivy Halloween costume. And while the red wig looks about as real as a plotline on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, it got us thinking. Is it time for Kim to grab the dye bottle and change up her look, joining Rihanna and Blake Lively in their newly-redheaded ranks?

For our fourth day of Fashion’ween, we bring you the ultimate icon for show-stopping dress up: none other than Vogue Nippon editrix, Anna Dello Russo. Famed for her many fantastical getups, the key to authenticating Dello Russo’s look is easier than it looks—it’s all about the mini dress, the sparkle, the tan, and the larger-than-life hair accessory.

Before, after, or during your fashion shower, follow along as we break down her look:

FASHION Plates: Your ultimate guide to the haute-ifying Rocky Horror Picture Show

Comments

Trick-or-treating aside, one of our favourite Halloween rituals has to be attending a screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show. For those of you virgins (we’re not really calling you virgins) who have never been to a show, we implore you to try it for yourself this year. There are generally midnight showings for many days leading up to and on Halloween night, and it’s a great excuse to dress up, bring some rice to a theatre, and let your freak flag fly.

But, what to wear? The Rocky Horror look can get a little trashy at times, so we present our ultimate guide to haute-ifying it. Yes, some of these price tags are a wee bit of a splurge for one night only, but we predict that you’ll want to wash and repeat for many years to come.

It’s day two of Fashion’ween and we’ve moved from fashion personality to fashion plaything. Katy Perry might not always dress on trend, but from the red carpet to her music videos, she’s proven that her off-the-wall outfits are just as catchy as her (many) #1 songs.

Fashion’ween: 8 steps to creating the perfect Karl Lagerfeld costume

Find out how to dress up as Karl Lagerfeld »

Halloween is just a week away, and that means it’s officially costume crunch time. In order to stir up some inspiration, we’re turning to some of our favourite and most interesting fashion icons. Each day this week we’ll showcase a costume that doesn’t involve devoting all your evenings to sewing sessions and papier-mâché messes. (And if you do end up dressing up as one of our suggestions, please share it with us on Twitter or Facebook!)

First up, everyone’s favourite fashion uncle, Karl Lagerfeld. We think this is a très chic costume for both guys and gals, and that’s not just because you get to wear a white old-timey powdered wig. Read more »

Michael Kors as the hedges, Heidi Klum as an Amazonian robot alien, and more fashion Halloween costumes

Comments

Red carpet spotting is more fun on Halloween–there’s little in the way of simple column dresses and more of a push towards robots. Which is what we think Heidi Klum is dressed as for her annual Halloween bash. (Or maybe an alien? A Transformer? Help us out here.) Lanvin also threw a party at their New York boutique, where Brad Goreski donned a wig and a bow and went as teen blogger phenom Tavi and Anne Hathaway went as a masked woman wearing Lanvin. Over at Bette Midler’s Hulaween for the New York Restoration Project, Michael Kors was done up in leafy garb, which, according to his Twitter feed, was meant to be “a slice of privet hedge.”
