The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) took place in London last night, and while the temperatures outside were chilly to say the least, snow didn’t stop the winners and nominees from attending Grey Goose’s red hot after party celebrating the Weinstein Company’s nominated films: Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained and The Master.

Many of the aforementioned films’ stars attended, including Hollywood’s It girl of the moment Jennifer Lawrence who shined in a sequined strapless Dior Haute Couture gown, slicked back hair and Chopard dangle earrings. As the party got underway, Lawrence and her Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper were back into the dancing swing of their Playbook characters, getting down on the dance floor with Michael Fassbender and British actress Alice Eve. If these photos are any indication, there was plenty of sweat and fun to be had. Also in attendance, Amy Adams looked gorgeous in a knee-length, beaded turquoise number (ID Pending).

It was another doozy of a night at the Grey Goose Soho House last night, with TIFF celebs upon TIFF celebs upon TIFF celebs showing up en masse to toast their various premieres, presentations and pals. As the official after party spot for Anna Karenina, Soho House’s first megawatt guest was Keira Knightley. Flawless in a black sheer lace-y floor-length Elie Saab gown, it was said that her every move was swanlike, and we believe it. Co-stars Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (alongside his May-December love, director and photographer Sam Taylor-Wood) channelled their period costumes, both wearing three-piece suits. Though there isn’t photo evidence of Matthew MacFayden’s wears, we’ll have an imaginary vision of him in period-inspired attire as well. We’ll also imagine his Mr. Darcy coif intact.

They said/We said: Harvey Weinstein reportedly believes that Lana Del Rey has the acting chops to make it as a movie star

Comments

Love her or hate her, Lana Del Rey’s meteoric rise to fame is showing no signs of flagging. After critics harshly panned the plush-lipped singer’s Saturday Night Live performance in January, it seemed like for a moment there, Del Rey’s star appeal was beginning to wane. However, one fashion accolade, a trip to Cannes’ red carpet and news of a big film industry opportunity later, and Del Rey is back on top.

First, there was the creation of her eponymous Mulberry bag, which was first announced in February. Its sales are fast approaching that of another famous Mulberry bag: the Alexa, named after Alexa Chung. “We wanted it to be functional with an uptown twist as Lana is such a wonderful uptown girl herself,” said Mulberry’s creative director Emma Hill.

The fashion world aside, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was reportedly overheard at the Cannes Film Festival telling the “Video Games” singer that the “camera loves her.”

Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax, is said to think Del Rey has all the makings of a movie star, from her stage presence to her stunning features to her gritty-meets-chic sense of style. The man obviously knows the movie biz inside and out (The Artist and The King’s Speech are two heavy-hitters that he’s responsible for), so if he is giving Del Rey the stamp of approval, other movie industry types will probably follow suit.

Whether or not she ends up on the big screen anytime soon, one thing’s for certain: this “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra” has an It factor that is opening doors for her in every direction.

TIFF partysphere: Adam Brody and Chace Crawford compare teenage heartthrobs notes at the Soho House, while we spill a drink on Harvey Weinstein

The tagline on next year’s Grey Goose Soho House invites should seriously read: “Four nights, four million celebs,” because it’s not normal how many are inside this place at one point on any given night. Last night, just as Madonna’s W.E. dinner was clearing out, we moseyed on over to catch a glimpse of our maker but, alas, she had slipped away. It quickly became apparent, though, that one Material Girl lost meant a million teenage heartthrobs gained. Or, should we say, a million teenage heartthrobs interacting with each other. In one corner, Adam Brody and Chace Crawford were chatting, most certainly trading notes about how to be a Josh Schwartzmoulded babe. In the next (or rather, upstairs), Justin Long and Michael Fassbender were busy at the ping-pong tables. As we mentioned earlier, Fassbender should probably stick to his day job, since his entire game consisted of running back and forth to catch his balls. (One landed near my foot. He touched it. And then apologized.) Channing Tatum was there somewhere too, but we didn’t spot him, or his dance moves. Back downstairs, Gerard Butler chatted with several, several ladies, one of who was Olivia Wilde in a body-hugging mega-sexy black dress. Peppered in among the youngsters, former heartthrobs (still, kinda?) Ralph Fiennes and Val Kilmer worked the room. They both have lots of hair at the moment.

They said/We said: And the outs keep coming. Harvey Weinstein and Marios Schwab are both leaving Halston

Comments

Photography by Peter Stigter

When we reported that Sarah Jessica Parker was exiting Halston earlier this week, we definitely didn’t expect two of the label’s other big names to follow suit in a matter of days. For what seems like the thousandth time in the past few years, Halston is about to undergo another round of drastic changes, as investor Harvey Weinstein and ready-to-wear designer Marios Schwab are also on their way out.

Reports began circulating yesterday that Weinstein, one of Halston’s main investors, would be withdrawing his support and ending his involvement with the company. The exits didn’t stop there, though, as today it was announced that designer Marios Schwab will not return for another season. In fact, the company’s only remaining investor, Hilco, may be pulling the plug on Halston’s ready-to-wear collection altogether, as the line will be put on hiatus for Spring 2012 and fall pieces may not ever hit stores. It seems their new strategy is to focus on the more affordable diffusion line and to abandon ship on the luxury market. Curious choice, since we all know that attempting to go mainstream marked the end of the original Halston’s success.

Although it’s clear that Schwab is a talented designer in his own right, we can’t exactly say we’re surprised about the failure of his designs at Halston. Perhaps it was due to pressure from the big bosses, but the three collections he showed were pretty safe and relied too much on the label’s history. Without innovation and a new perspective (think Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga), a heritage line runs the risk of feeling outdated and irrelevant.

They said/We said: Why Sarah Jessica Parker is out at Halston Heritage

Comments

Photography by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

Sarah Jessica Parker is “out,” as Heidi Klum would say. Just a year and seven months after SJP signed on as the chief creative officer of Halston Heritage, the relationship has come to an end. Perhaps the recent departure has to do with Halston letting go its CEO, Bonnie Takhar, last November. According to British Vogue, upon hearing of the company’s sayonara to Takhar, Parker was in tears.

On a less dramatic note, it’s quite possible that the label needed a more practically experienced leader. Parker herself is more of a fashion enthusiast than an educated designer. Or maybe it was a question of commitment. In addition to working for Halston, Parker has been a busy woman: raising kids, producing reality shows, and filming and promoting movies. To quote her upcoming blockbuster, I Don’t Know How She Does It.

As the industry-wide game of musical chairs continues, we wonder who will take Parker’s place. Those are some pretty high heels to fill.
