Juiced up

Comments

nov09readscleanseIt pays to be careful if you’re going to try a juice cleanse—you want to make sure you’re getting enough nutrients and energy to last through the day. As well, it can involve hours of labouring away in the kitchen juicing your body-weight in leafy greens. Total Cleanse (totalcleanse.ca) takes care of the planning for you—they’ll deliver a full complement of fresh, tasty and surprisingly filling juices, with instructions on when to drink them.

Healthier fries? Yes please!

Comments

Photography by istockphoto.com

Though I consider myself a fairly health-conscious person, summer days spent on the patio have caused me to indulge a bit too heavily in sweet potato fries. (Yes, the vitamin A contents supposedly makes them healthier than regular French fries, but the decision to order them is never guilt-free.) Our new favourite snack

My new favourite afternoon treat: the soon-to-launch PB&J flavoured Lärabar. It contains exactly four ingredients (dates, peanuts, unsweetened cherries and salt), which is just what makes Lärabars so great; they have no fillers, nothing hydrogenated, no additives, no gluten, dairy, sugar—no nuthin’. Just healthy stuff, and they actually taste delicious. This is my favourite flavour yet: You get the sweet yet tart kick of cherry jam, the creamy saltiness of peanut butter and, call me crazy, the texture of the dates even mimics the chewiness of sliced brown bread. Take that, Timbits.

$2.30, at grocery and health stores in September.

Saskatoon: A clean slate

Comments

feb09lulu_250I have a love-hate relationship with January.  I can’t wait to begin the New Year with a fresh slate, a clean start, a new me.   It is a time to set goals, clean closets, shed extra pounds, re-evaluate, plan, organize and reacquaint myself with old friends—in my case, the gym.
