Go beyond a bottle of wine with these sweet-smelling hostess gifts

Comments

I’m not always the most original hostess gift-giver (a nice bottle of ice wine or champagne is almost always my fallback), but this season, I’m going to have these gift sets from Beautymark (beautymark.ca) ready to go instead. The Fresh Hesperides Collection set of body lotion and soap ($40) looks classy and appears more expensive than it is. The Philosophy Holiday Hostess ($26) set, with a shower gel and lotion, smells like cinnamon buns–perfect for the girlfriend who made all five dinner courses, including dessert.

It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas with this minty candle

I have a challenging relationship with the holidays. I love hanging out with the family, eating turkey dinner, and watching my nieces’ and nephews’ faces light up when they open their presents. I dislike having to choose which family we spend our vacation time with–my husband’s family in the sunny Dominican Republic or mine in snowy Calgary. Either way I end up feeling guilty about my decision. So this Christmas, we’re staying home. And to help Toronto feel more festive, we’re decorating our house with plump snowmen, pine-cone wreaths, a miniature fabric tree, and a candy-cane smelling Agraria White Mint Perfume Candle ($43, agrariahome.com). It’s the right choice. It’s also beginning to smell a lot like Christmas in our house and that feels like a very good thing.

Give this season’s holiday parties the cold shoulder–literally. These pretty pieces elevate the one-shouldered evening top with extra sparkle. Whether you prefer small doses like carefully-applied crystals ($69, cassis.ca) or all over glitz like a shimmering copper silk ($59, cassis.ca), consider your “what to wear?” conundrum solved.

Guelph: Verging on the holidays

Comments

The town is still abuzz from this week’s unofficial kick off to the holidays and the event I look forward to every year: the Stay Out of the Mall concert. A shopping or fashion event it is not, but it captures some of the best qualities of Guelph: indie rock, independent businesses and of course, local beer.
