Louis Vuitton show for Spring 2012 opened with the tinkling of a music box and the rising of a scrim to reveal a carousel carrying girls in pale dresses on cream-coloured ponies. It might have seemed a saccharine set-up, but such a response could just be a bad case of not getting it. The news of the season is gentle news. That’s what Marc Jacobs got so right at Louis Vuitton. All the white and those whitened pastels—a key colour trend, favoured by both traditionalists such as Ralph Lauren and more experimental types such as Christopher Kane and Hussein Chalayan—might have appeared to be borrowed from a bag of miniature marshmallows. But the candied palette was not there simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. It also appeals to a Bluetooth appetite when dished out in fabrics that are marvels of modern technology—things like foam organza, silk cellophane and laser-cut leatherette. For the theory-minded, it’s tempting to conclude from the fact that we live in times when you see toddlers dressed in skull patterns and infants swaddled in camo-print blankets that it’s only logical their moms should start playing with pink and baby blue. PFW diary: Welcome to the jungle at Hussein Chalayan, Roland Mouret, Vionnet, Roger Vivier, and Lanvin

Comments

Finding your seat at a Paris fashion show can sometimes pose un problème: some spaces are as dark as haunted houses (Hussein Chalayan) while others are so tiny that introductions often aren’t necessary before making body contact (Carven). Finding my seat at Roland Mouret proved to be a rather glam experience; the ornate ballroom in L’Hôtel Westin is the perfect place to rise and shine. It’s like freshly squeezed OJ served in a gilded chalice. The show was very Parisienne chic (tailored cropped jackets paired with body skimming pencil skirts, flirty ruffles, the perfect cap sleeved shift dress in several shades of blue, sexy peek-a-boo accents on hemlines and playful sartorial accents like the not-so evil eyes) though there was one surprising models-they’re-just-like-us moment: the cone-heeled shoes squeaked with every step.

PFW diary: Day 1 in Paris brings a visit to Colette, and more pearls from the Hussein Chalayan exhibit

Comments

A rare break on the Paris fashion week calendar means an editor does one or two things:

1. Visit Colette. (Check!) Among the countless chic finds, the Jeremy Scott x Swatch collab watches make telling time—at least when your iPhone dies—a very colourful experience.

2. Visit a museum. I zipped over to Les Arts Décoratifs to zoom through Hussein Chalayan’s Fashion Narratives. Known for his highly inventive designs that fuse fashion, architecture, and technology together, this exhibit highlights Chalayan’s kook-tastic universe using a multi-sensory experience, including voice, body, music, light, and décor that mirrors his ready-to-wear shows.

SNP’s word of the day: Ambimorphous

Comments

Word: Ambimorphous

Meaning: Well, Hussein Chalayan made it up, but he took inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, in which Alice grows and changes rapidly in one of two opposing directions.

Usage: “The clothes represent forms that are, so to speak, ‘ambimorphous,’ where all forms can morph in two different directions…” ― Hussein Chalayan

Royal wedding countdown: Day 2

Comments

While some seem doubtful, we feel that Kate has the chops to one day become a style icon rivaling her late great mother-in-law. Kate, if you’re reading this (Hi!!!), we think all it would really take is branching out from your jersey dresses and pea coats and embracing the incredible talent that London fashion has to offer. For the couple’s impending honeymoon (rumoured to be taking place in either Australia or Africa), we picked a slightly more daring designer honeymoon wardrobe that we think would be sure to help Katie that secure her a spot in royal fashion history.
