If you’ve always dreamed of bike rides along the Seine, wearing Breton stripes, but meanwhile find yourself locked in your room with Vivre sa Vie and Serge Gainsbourg on repeat (is that just us?), you’re probably wary of books claiming to be guides to the Parisian lifestyle. Leave it to the ultimate Parisian It girl, Inès de la Fressange, to pen a guide to French style that is not only quite readable but useful too! Former muse to Karl Lagerfeld, de la Fressange has long been an icon in our eyes… and here are our 10 favourites from her many pearls of wisdom:

Catherine Deneuve is Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest star + front row mayhem caught on camera!

Jean Paul Gaultier Finale.

Jean Paul Gaultier always delivers entertainment in addition to standout clothes. But for his spring 2011 couture collection, he proved just how clever a showman he is.

His Rue Saint Martin headquarters was packed with heavy hitters: clients (including a young oil-type who was veiled and sabled to the floor) as well as high profile friends like model, Ines de la Fressange who wielded a peacock blue crocodile handbag, from the Roger Vivier collection she is ambassadress for, no doubt.

But what really sent the paparazzi into a tizzy was the double-whammy of Catherine Deneuve and director Pedro Almodovar, who were encouraged to nuzzle in their front row seats, guaranteeing that everyone walked away with a money shot.

Video: See the full Chanel Spring 2011 runway show

Comments

Even if you’ve seen pictures of the clothes, this video of the Chanel Spring 2011 show is worth watching because it captures the size of the spectacle–the movement of the clothes and the models weaving around a manicured garden inside the Grand Palais. There are also post-show interviews with Claudia Schiffer, Leigh Lezark and Inès de la Fressange, who says of her appearance: “It’s nice for women to show that they don’t have to be perfect young beautiful models; that even a famous designer like Karl Lagerfeld can hire a granny.”

Paris notes: Elegant decay at Chanel and Sarah Burton’s runway debut for Alexander McQueen [gallery]

“You can see who has the real power in Paris,” one retailer remarked as we took our seats along with nearly 3,000 others in the Grand Palais for Chanel’s Spring 2011 show.

Where other designers have absurdly restrictive guest lists, Chanel has always opened its arms to clients, buyers and press. Although the inclusiveness comes with some precautions: explosive-sniffing dogs and airport security scanners were posted at the entrance.

You can’t blame Chanel for wanting to protect their investment (or their clients, for that matter). The house had taken over the entire Grand Palais, assembling an astounding 90 models, recreating a Versailles-type formal garden in stark black and white, and brought in an 80-piece orchestra for musical accompaniment. The collection was equally bold with pearl-spattered knits, moth-eaten tweeds and ostrich feathers fluttering from jacket hems or covering an entire dress. There was an air of elegant decay to many of the pieces, in keeping with the season’s undercurrent of punk.

Karl Lagerfeld took his bow arm in arm with Inès de la Fressange, the face of Chanel in the 1980s, whom he had fired decades ago after a perceived indiscretion. But time can heal even the deepest rifts. [See a video of the Chanel show, including an interview with Inès de la Fressange]

Yesterday also featured Sarah Burton’s touching runway debut as creative director of Alexander McQueen. Her butterfly frills, gilded wheat trims, psychotic ruching and fantastical feathers proved she is more than able to carry the torch for the late, tortured fashion genius.

Other highlights: Romantic, feminine frills at Valentino.

Fashion news: Ruffian line hits Anthropologie, DWTS rejects Vera Wang designs and more

The new line Mise en Scene by Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais has hit Anthropologie. The lower-priced collection of clothing and home décor was inspired by starlet dressing rooms in films like All About Eve and Stage Fright. The classic Ruffian style of sharp tailoring and classic, elegant fabrics are still there, but for a price that (probably) won’t give you buyer’s remorse. [Racked]

Coach designer Reed Krakoff will show his new line of accessories in February 2010 during Fashion Week. [The Cut]

Vera Wang opted out of Dancing with the Stars but not because she can’t dance. Apparently ABC refused to let Vera Wang design her own costumes for the show. You just don’t do that. [FWD]
