We may get a lot of useless stuff in this office, but we can always count on Chanel to deliver on gasp-inducing promotional items. This cloth messenger bag adorned with buttons (as well as a packet of yet more buttons) arrived this morning as part of the press kit for Chanel’s new lipstick, Rouge Coco, which launches in March. Suffice to say, many staffers were très jalouse when they laid eyes on these.
The first time I interviewed makeup artist Dick Page was in 2004. I had sent emails to him asking for a phone interview and assumed they had just gone into a black hole where requests from Canadian editors went to die. But while working late one night, my phone rang. When I answered, the voice on the other end announced, “Hi Lesa, it’s Dick Page” and I managed to not fall out of my chair. Hearing him describe makeup inspirations and applications was unlike anything I’d ever encountered; it was poetic. I even put my head down on my desk afterwards, the experience was so enthralling. (I’m a dork. So be it).

The Pretty Woman-inspired story in our August 2009 issue is one of our favourite shoots ever. Not just the nostalgia factor–we used to recite lines from this movie ad infinitum–but we love seeing all those gorgeous fall clothes in equally gorgeous locations around Toronto. We’re currently putting together a men’s supplement, due out this fall. The timing is such that we’re working on it at the same time as our October issue so the FASHION offices are jammed–even more than usual. We don’t usually have any men’s fashion around these parts so the racks and boxes of merch are quite the novelty (though perhaps not as much as the male model currently down the hall). During a lull between interviews at our cover shoot (corralling 11 Canada’s Next Top Model hopefuls into hair, makeup and wardrobe and onto set is no mean feat), fashion director Susie Sheffman suddenly yelled my name and pulled me into the wardrobe room. There, Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill of Greta Constantine were ripping the sleeves off a jersey dress and redesigning it–right on the model! We’ve got that, and more, in our making of video.

I walked over to the beauty department today to see for myself the YSL summer beauty collection our beauty ed was tweeting about (RT OOOHING and AAHHHING over YSL’s Summer Makeup collection, newly arrived in the office. Seriously. Off the charts.) and pretty much tripped over a honking bag of bronzers that are in contention for our summer issue. How the beauty girls can choose just a few, I’ll never know.
