TFW backstage beauty: IZMA

Comments

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

I didn’t attend LG Fashion Week last night and therefore, did not poke around backstage
at IZMA to grill the L’Oreal Paris hair and makeup teams about what they
were whipping up to complement the ultra glam collection, but damn I wish I
 had.

TFW diary: Fur’s homegrown moment at IZMA

IZMA Fall 2011

Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

On the international fashion scene, fur is having a major moment. From New York to Paris, it seemed as though the runways were rife with the fuzzy stuff. Serendipitous then, for Izzy Camilleri and Adrian Mainella of IZMA for whom fur is forte. And these are definitely not grandma’s fur coats. For fall, entirely modern bits like thick bands of gold studs, copper foil linings and micro mini hems, were mashed up with seriously ‘70s undertones such as evergreen furs, jumpsuits the colour of roasted squash and sheer burgundy velvet burnout.

There were highs—the colour blocked fur coats—and lows—an unflattering tuxedo onesie with voluminous pant, and unfortunate metallic sequined leggings. Should you happen to be invited to a black tie gala in an ice palace, the finale look would have you covered in a floor length fur gown complete with train and jeweled straps. Let the fur fly!

Toronto Fashion Week: IZMA debuts their fresh take on furs

IZMA Fall 2010. Photography by Jenna Marie Wakani

Those who trudged out in the rain to catch the opening show at Toronto Fashion Week with an impeccably-done presentation from IZMA, Izzy Camilleri and Adrian Mainella‘s new line of fur pieces. Camilleri, a leather and fur specialist, and Mainella, a fashion journalist best known for his hosting duties on the now-defunct Fashion File, are positioning their line as green and sustainable, in both their use of wild furs and the material’s inherent heirloom qualities. (If you’re anti-fur, none of this matters, of course.)

The IZMA team clearly wants to break away from your grandma’s fur coat, offering up unexpected pieces such as a beaver tunic with a deep V-neck, hoods in bleached coyote and red fox, a skirt in inky black coyote that doubles as a cape and a fox fur purse with a multi-chain strap flips up onto the shoulder to become a bandeau. Coolest was a vest strung with chains and strips of sheared beaver. There were plenty of coats and capes too, like a swing coat done in muskrat, a slouchy sheared beaver wrap and a cropped hooded bomber in silver fox. The leather–a creamy double-breasted suit, or black trousers, for starters–was Emma Peel tight, though Camilleri promises that the pieces will be real-world wearable when they hit stores. The final three looks showed examples of the custom work IZMA will be offering, and show Camilleri’s skills as a red-carpet designer. A full skirt flounced as if it were made of ostrich feathers and a short see-through dress was covered with tufts of fur and a luxe black capelet. It was a strong debut for Mainella and Camilleri’s collaboration and an equally strong start to LG Fashion Week.

A new venue for LG Fashion Week. (Round 2)

We mentioned earlier today that LG Fashion Week would now be taking place at the Allstream Centre at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. According to a release sent today by the Fashion Design Council of Canada, the organization “requires a much larger canvas to articulate its vision” and that the warehouse at 30 Ordnance Street was a “romantic idea,” but fraught with logistical challenges. How a warehouse is romantic, we don’t know, so we’ll just join the chorus of tweeters who are just happy that there will be proper washrooms. Read more »
