The best jeans for your body: 6 styles to help calm shopping panic attacks

Jeans for your body: Boyfriend Jean

Few things in life can evoke the sheer panic that I experience when it comes time to search for a new pair of jeans, and if I do, chances are that many women out there do too. Jeans are at once the simplest wardrobe staple and the most conundrum-inducing item to shop for. Scarred by years of flood-pants, protruding love handles and other similar style blunders, I tend to avoid this shopping experience like the plague. And while 30 Rock’s Jenna Maroney might make a killing off her Muffin Tops, this zaftig gal tends to prefer to keep hers under wraps.

Unless you happen to be blessed with a perfectly proportionate figure (for which I likely will hate you), there are a plethora of issues you can experience when trying to find the best jeans for your body type. And even those with the seemingly perfect parts are unlikely to walk into a store and presto perfect fit! There are pinches in unwanted places, hemming nightmares and an unholy amount of spandex.

Fear not, dear readers, all is not lost. The denim-gods were not so cruel as to prevent us all from joining in on casual Friday at the office. For every fail there is a fix and the perfect denim duds are out there for you. Our advice?

Step one: take a deep breath and jump in. Though the hot, un-flattering fitting room lights are capable of throwing even the calmest women into a tizzy, the key is to just relax. Know that you’re not the only one with this dilemma. Take the time to find the perfect jeans for your body. Consider fit before going for the trendiest pair. As much as I may have coveted these ridiculous Maison Martin Margiela for H&M boyfriend parachute pair, I had to accept that they just weren’t for my hourglass figure.

To help you out, we’ve scoured through the racks of pudge-pinching, ill-fitting nightmares to find six essential jeans for every body shape and size. May this put the final kibosh on your recurring shopping nightmares.

Our favourite fashion voyeurs are at it again. Last night Toronto’s most discernibly trendy gathered at Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street location for private viewing of The Coveteur’s photo exhibition (which we exclusively previewed) in collaboration with J Brand jeans. The show, which runs until September 17 at Holt Renfrew features intimate snapshots that take us inside the drool-worthy closets of DJ Daisy O’Dell, costume designer Erin Benach (recently in Toronto in conjunction with her work on the new Ryan Gosling flick A Place Beyond The Pines), actress Mickey Sumner (she may just be the daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler) and celebrity stylist Karla Welch. The exhibit also celebrates J Brand’s latest ready-to-wear collection.

As part of Holt Renfrew’s ongoing 175th birthday celebrations the historic Canadian retailer has teamed up with J Brand and the online style-hub The Coveteur to showcase J Brand’s fall collection. We have received an exclusive peek at the gallery created for this event before it goes on display starting Thursday September 13 at Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street location in Toronto. The photo series will also be on The Coveteur’s website on the same day. In case you’ve been living under a not-super-stylish rock, The Coveteur, founded by designer Erin Kleinberg and stylist Stephanie Mark, is a website that has been going behind the scenes and into the closets of some of the world’s most influential style icons, captured by photographer Jake Rosenberg. Some of their recent projects include looking into Vogue Japan’s editor-at-large Anna Dello Russo’s enviable closet full of shoes and sunglasses (fashion shower not included). For this event, they have sneaked a peek into the closets and wardrobes of four fashionable stars (three of whom who are conveniently in town for TIFF).

Olympic OMG! Kate and Will hug it out in matching Team GB polos!

See what else Kate wore today »

If this doesn’t melt your heart, we don’t know what will. Kate and Will have clearly given themselves over to the spirit of the London 2012 games, and even went for a full out hug while watching the Team GB athletes at the Velodrome today! In the same matching polos they’ve been wearing all week, no less. (Here’s hoping they’ve been laundered). While the outfit details aren’t too exciting (recycled polo, recycled J Brand jeans, recycled Stuart Weitzman heels), the embrace says it all. And by it, we mean swoon.

As for today’s other recycles, Kate was spotted at Wimbledon earlier today cheering on Andy Murray in her bright blue Stella McCartney T-shirt dress and Smythe blazer alongside Will. The couple reportedly surprised fans with the un-slated appearance and even sat in the cheap seats to take in the match!

Kate Middleton recycles yesterday’s outfit to cheer on Zara Phillips’ silver medal on the equestrian course today

See what Kate’s been wearing to the Olympics so far! »

No, that’s not a double take: Kate is indeed wearing the exact same outfit as yesterday, but with a different top underneath her Smythe blazer. Quelle recycle! Yesterday we wondered, and now we’re fairly certain that Kate’s getup is intentionally laid-back so as to not to detract attention from Zara Phillips‘ silver medal run on the equestrian course today (way to go!). Given how intricately detailed the course is, we’d say that in and of itself was a gussied up distraction complete with a miniature model of Buckingham Palace, a crescent moon and a special hedge celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee!

And now for the outfit rundown, shall we? As well as the Smythe blazer, Kate’s wearing her good ole J Brand skinny jeans, Stuart Weitzman cork wedges, a striped sweater tank and a gold Team Great Britain pin on her lapel. Now that Phillips has grasped her medal, we’d be more than okay with Kate showing off some new getups. Right?

It should come as no surprise that Her Madgesty is going to be royally decked out for her upcoming MDNA concert tour. The fact that Jean Paul Gaultier, her long-time collaborator (and creator of that oh-so-famous conical bra), is already on board is reason enough to get excited about the costumes, but now WWD is reporting that Jeremy Scott and Alexander Wang will both be creating stage outfits as well.

FASHION Plates: Mark Rothko’s Red

Comments

The eccentric American artist Mark Rothko changed the art world in the ’40s and ’50s with his abstract expressionist art. His signature style of rectangles in fields of colour has had a major impact on the colour-blocking trend that dominated the runways this past spring and continues to be seen everywhere for fall. With the recent Canadian premiere of Red, a Tony Award–winning play that lets us in on the life of the artist, here’s our guide on how to become a walking piece of Rothko art.
