It’s been a couple of months since the last big red carpet event and let’s face it: what is fashion without the red carpet? Since May is just around the corner, this only means the biggest fashion event of the year, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in New York. This year’s exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will feature around designs for both men and women focusing on the evolution of punk’s influence in the world of fashion since the birth of its movement in the 1970s to its present day.

With punk theme as the focus, who better than to have punk’s latest muse, actress Rooney Mara, and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as this year’s co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour and Moda Operandi’s Lauren Santo Domingo? Not usually associated with punk, Beyonce was named Honourary Chair of the event as if her show-stopping Givenchy dress at last year’s MET Gala was not enough of a reason to be given this honour.

New York Fashion Week: 5 colour trends to watch for come Fall 2013

Zac Posen Fall 2013

Winter whiteouts wreaked havoc on highways (and hair) over the last couple of days but they didn’t blow onto the runways at New York Fashion Week Fall 2013. From the neon green topper I spied in the crowd at Diane Von Furstenberg to the resplendent Oscar-worthy gowns at Zac Posen drenched in rich vibrant hues (Plum! Ink! Bordeaux!), it’s clear that pale was a fail on the Sunday runways. Over at the tents, Diane Von Furstenberg heat things up with her electric, glam rock show–complete with pretty young things like Katharine McPhee and Vanessa Hudgens sitting front row and a collection that screamed “Life of the Party.” Think coats with luxe lizard coatings, rabbit fur vests, snake zip clutches and fluttery chiffon halter neck maxi dresses– perfect for that 5-star warm winter getaway. Rockstar fantasy or reality? At DVF, it’s always a little bit of both.

Jason Wu Lancome makeup

Only two weeks after dressing Michelle Obama for the Inaugural Ball, Jason Wu has announced that he will be collaborating with Lancôme on a limited-edition cosmetics line. Wu joins Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz (who is also doing a makeup line with Lancôme) in an emerging trend of fashion designers partnering with cosmetic brands. While specific product details have not yet been released, Lancôme has indicated that the colourful cosmetics range will embody a modern elegance that is in line with Wu’s design aesthetic.

Fans of Jason Wu will know that this is not the designer’s first venture into colour cosmetics: He also did a successful nail polish set with CND two years ago. However, this collaboration is expected to include a more extensive line of products. On partnering with Lancôme in particular, Wu told WWD that he admires the quality of Lancôme’s products and noted that the brand has a reputation for celebrating individual beauty. “This is the embodiment of a truly modern, sexy and confident woman, much like the women I design for,” said Wu.

Michelle Obama’s Jason Wu two-peat: Which of the First Lady’s inauguration dresses did you like best?

Michelle Obama Inauguration Jason Wu

See both of Michelle Obama’s inauguration dresses up-close »

Four years ago, at the 2009 inauguration ball for President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama dazzled the crowd in a Jason Wu gown that helped catapult both of them into the fashion forefront. Everyone was predicting which new designer she would help rise to fame this time around, but Michelle Obama aka. @FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) surprised everyone by donning yet another Jason Wu gown.

No one was more surprised than the designer himself.  Wu told WWD, “Mrs. Obama likes to keep her secrets. She surprised me again. She’s really good at it. I was so nervous. You’d think I wouldn’t be since I’d experienced it before but I really was.” He spent the evening watching the Inauguration with his team and tweeted “#Inshock!!!” as soon as he saw the First Lady walk out on stage.

What’s in your bag, Allison Williams?

Go inside Allison Williams’ bag! »

Girls is back. Girls is back! One of our most intense cultural obsessions returns with its Season 2 premiere on January 13, 2013 at 9pm on HBO Canada, and what better way to celebrate than with a look inside the beautiful bag of one of its beautiful stars, Allison Williams.

Our former cover girl was in Toronto last week to promote the new episodes as well as the release of season one on DVD and Blu-Ray (Its accompanying book of Lena Dunham’s tweets is epic, FYI) and graciously dumped the contents of her Jason Wu Daphne shoulder bag. While her stuff was being photographed, I super-fan quizzed her on the return of Booth Johnathan as well as what the next season looks like for character Marnie Michaels, who seemed to be floundering sans-boyfriend and roommate at the end of season one. “She’s having a rough go. She’s without the same comforts that she had in season one, so she’s very influx, and that is something that I know that I, and a lot of my friends can relate to,” she said. “When it rains, it really does seem to pour especially when you’re in your mid-twenties when you don’t have a lot of foundation already laid down it can just throw everything into upheaval at once—job, everything.”

Target takes holiday cheer (and Bullseye the dog!) from coast to coast with a cross Canada roadtrip

Target Roadtrip Holiday 2012

There are only six months between Canadians and freestanding Target stores, but to help make the waiting time go faster, Target will be heading out on a holiday 2012 road trip. The American retailer will be going from coast to coast while bringing holiday celebrations to more than 20 cities across Canada.

The road trip kicks off in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Dalhousie University on November 30 and will come to a close in British Colombia in mid-December. The first stop will feature guest performances, holiday treats (everybody’s favourite part) and even an opportunity to have your photo taken with Bullseye the dog who is, as you’d suspect, super cute. And that’s only a taste of what’s to come. You can follow the tour’s route on Twitter or Facebook to know if Target is headed to a town near you.

Michelle Obama wears Michael Kors on election night: Here’s to another four years!

Michelle Obama wears Michael Kors on Election Night

As voters south of the border effectively re-elected President Barack Obama into office for his second term, we, fashionites breathed a sigh of relief: here’s to another years of Michelle Obama, her arms and her championing of American designers.

To celebrate alongside her husband last night in Chicago, the First Lady wore a magenta silk chine Michael Kors dress. While it may be the colour of the opposition, red (and its shades) seem to be the safe choice for Michelle Obama when it comes to historical events. Who could forget the red and black sleeveless Narciso Rodriguez number she wore on election night back in November ‘08 as her husband historically defeated John McCain to become the first black president of the United States?

Michelle Obama is no stranger to A+ sartorial choices, and can usually be seen wearing homegrown talents such as Thakoon, Tracy Reese, Reuben and Isabel Toledo and Jason Wu, whose career has skyrocketed since the First Lady famously wore his dress to the Inaugural Ball back ’09. It was the stuff of Jackie Kennedy-like spine chills. Here’s to many many more of those.
