They said/We said: Jean Paul Gaultier’s Amy Winehouse-inspired couture collection has many feeling uneasy

The inspiration for yesterday’s Jean Paul Gaultier couture show has many feeling a bit uneasy. Walking to a barbershop rendition of Rehab, the models were total Amy Winehouse doppelgangers, complete with beehives, lip piercings, and thickly winged eyeliner (not to mention exposed bra straps and cigarettes). Considering the news-making songstress died just over six months ago, it seems like a case of too much, too soon.

At the forefront of those who are decrying the show is Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, who just this morning tweeted: “We don’t support the Jean Paul Gaultier’s [sic] collection. It’s in bad taste.” Read more »

They said/We said: The latest rumour about modeling sensation Andrej Pejic

Comments

Photography by Moo

What’s our favourite androgynous model Andrej Pejic to do after ruling the runway, posing in push-up bras, and landing our February cover? Why, a fragrance campaign, of course! It seems the beauty, who is giving the ladies and gents of the runway a run for their money, has no signs of slowing down. He may soon be the fresh face of a perfume.

A French TF1 Channel called Sept a Huit aired a taping of behind-the-scenes action with Pejic, documenting the model in fittings and rehearsals for Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2012 menswear show and Michalksy womenswear show in Berlin, in which the commentator exposed via voice-over that Pejic “will sign, in several weeks, his first contract to lend his image to a major perfume brand.”

Which campaign will the fashion chameleon grace? No word on the label quite yet.  However, Pejic’s affiliation with Gaultier makes us wonder if he’s a candidate for the (mens? womens? unisex?) fragrance.

Then again, Pejic was featured in the (always edgy) Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 campaign which was a brilliant fit, (Dakota Fanning better cling to her Lola bottle!) and Louis Vuitton still hasn’t announced who will be the face of its new fragrance. The options seem endless for fashion’s latest obsession.

We may not know much about the campaign yet, but we do know one thing: Pejic is bound to produce stellar pictures (as always) and we’ll be waiting on the edges of our seats to see them!

Inside Jeanne Beker’s personal art collection: LaChapelle, Gaultier, Saint Laurent, and more!

Jeanne Beker’s lifelong romance with fashion has been widely broadcast over the years, but did you know that she’s also an art lover? The Fashion Television host has been collecting contemporary art since 1980, beginning with her first painting from artist Marion Perlet. “Starting a collection seems daunting because it sounds like you’re making a commitment to a certain style or form or sensibility or type of work,” says Beker. “Art is all around us and exists in so many wonderful, different forms and at so many different price points.”
Beker was invited by the Art Gallery of Ontario to share several works from her diverse collection as part of the gallery’s Collector’s Series. FASHION got a one-on-one tour of her favourite pieces, along with some tips for would-be art aficionados. “Buy something that really speaks to you at the moment,” she advises. “And don’t ever buy anything just because you think it’s going to look good over your couch!”

SNP’s word of the day: Ectype

Comments

Word: Ectype

Meaning: An exact copy. Also, the externalization of an idea, like an archetype, which—when repeated sufficiently—becomes a stereotype.

Usage: To paraphrase the Beastie Boys, “She’s crafty, and she’s just my ectype.”

They said/We said: Jean Paul Gaultier has fashion-ified a bar of gold

Comments

In the market for gold? Neither are we, but Jean Paul Gaultier has designed a bar of gold for French investment company CPoR Devises. Known for his outrageous designs—including Madonna’s infamous cone bra and a dress made out of bread—Gaultier has gone for a simpler design this time around, adorning the bar with his heart logo.

Sure, it’s always smart to invest during tough economic times, but you can’t really do much with a bar of gold other than brag to your friends that it was designed by Gaultier. If you do change your mind, though, and really want to impress everyone you know, the 25-karat bar is going for the modest price of US$1,861.

PFW diary: Our cheat sheet to a day full of Jean Paul Gaultier, Viktor & Rolf, Cacharel, Sonia Rykiel, and Kanye West gossip

Judging from the long line-ups at the Gelato stands I whizzed by today, Paris is doing Summer: Part Deux. While the temperatures continue to soar, the PFWers continue to get creative with the contents of their luggage in an attempt to beat the heat: Knits are paired with shorts and summer dresses with suede knee-high boots; open-toed flat sandals are back; hair has gone the way of the top knot and makeup is down to a slash of bright lipstick. Bags run the gamut from leather to straw to skins to canvas. And sunglasses? If you don’t have a pair that’s brightly coloured/aviator/dark and oversized/white, you might as well stay in your hotel room and catch up on the Jackson Trial. Luckily, I brought two pairs that fit the bill (David Yurman and Marc Jacobs) so I spent Saturday dodging French doggie doo on the streets in between shows and presentations. Here’s the highlight reel of my day:

They said/We said: More on the phenom that is New York Magazine’s latest cover boy, Andrej Pejic

Comments

New York Magazine’s biannual fashion issue has arrived, and with it came an encouraging industry-wide frenzy about cover model Andrej Pejic. This time around, Pejic is not only receiving attention for his looks but also for what he has to say. It’s kind of momentous, as if a star was born—one that, as Pejic puts it himself, doesn’t get out of bed for less that $50 a day. (A far and ironic cry from Linda Evangelista’s famed similar claim about her $10,000 minimum.)

The androgynous model has been on a rapid rise to fame since Sarah Doukas started marketing him as a woman, Carine Roitfeld styled him in Fendi, and he walked Jean Paul Gaultier’s runway. He embraces his gender-blending look, saying, “It’s not like, ‘Okay, today I want to look like a man, or today I want to look like a woman’; I want to look like me. It just so happens that some of the things I like are feminine.”

What seems to have struck readers positively is Pejic’s amusing personality. He relieves tension with punch lines like, “My whole life is controversy. What can I do? I’m like Britney Spears!” He’s surprisingly hilarious and confident—not to mention, successful—for a 19-year-old.

Pejic is no stranger to controversy. In May, FHM ran a story online that referred to Pejic as a “thing” and later took it down. In the same month, Pejic covered Dossier shirtless, and the magazine got censored at both Barnes & Noble and Borders. So, does the praise Pejic is receiving from New York Magazine mean the mainstream is ready to embrace him as an icon? We’ll have to wait and see. But if his career takes a turn for the worse, he’ll tell you, “I’ll come back with a sex tape…I’d bring in latex, make it really fashion, really artsy.”
