Riot Act: A look back at punk’s wild influence on fashion

Riot Act: Punk Fashion

See punk fashion on the runways »

When the Sex Pistols burst onto the scene in 1976, their spitting anarchist anthems were the antithesis of high fashion. But these days, a studded leather motorcycle jacket is as covet-worthy as a designer bag.

Opening on May 7, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York shines the spotlight on this rebellious movement with its latest Costume Institute exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture. In its early days, British punk rock bands like The Clash forced safety pins through leather while Patti Smith, The Ramones and Blondie’s Debbie Harry holed up at New York’s legendary dive bar CBGB in tattered T-shirts and ripped jeans as a protest against the city’s glitzy disco scene.

Designer Vivienne Westwood’s punk roots also run deep—in 1976 she cultivated many of this era’s DIY hallmarks at her London boutique, Seditionaries, which she owned with then-boyfriend, visual artist and Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren. The duo’s endlessly creative takes on rebellion helped shape the unofficial punk uniform, with reappropriated patriotic symbols including Queen Elizabeth II’s face and the Union Jack. The movement’s raw aesthetic gained mainstream appeal in 1977, when British designer Zandra Rhodes used exposed seams, strategic rips and bondage-like accents on her floor-length dresses.

Paris Fashion Week: Jean Paul Gaultier’s fierce muse for Fall 2013

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall 2013

Exquisitely tailored leathers, patchwork fur and punky toupées (that coiffed the models with wild two-tone hair): all the ingredients you might expect from a Jean Paul Gaultier show and then some.

The stage at Place Wagram was set like a Broadway production of Chicago; a double-tiered backdrop of square “cells” showcased about a dozen women frozen in provocative silhouettes. One by one each shadow came forward on the runway exuding a fierce don’t-mess-with-me attitude. Then, about 16 looks into the mix, a copy of the red and black checkered background reappeared as a print – at first on a butterfly sleeve dress, followed by a hoodie and eventually a pencil skirt, but most notably in a subdued pale green and grey palette on the fur-collared wrap-coat worn by muse-of-the-moment Jessica Stam.

More heart-stopping moments: the oxblood kimono-inspired robe with oversized obi tied over the hips, a floor-skimming shearling coat with a bottom-half frontal cut-out (all the better to see your legs, my dear!), plus Jean Paul Gaultier’s signature cone bras fused into leather peplum tops, followed by his mariner stripes placed strategically over a sheer tunic.

For the closing, two models in metallic suits marched in tandem down the T-shaped catwalk. The fitted blazers and tapered pants glistened under the spotlight. While one was clad in head-to-toe bronze, and the other in shimmery silver, it was a sensational finale of pure gold.

Forget diamonds, everybody knows that shoes are a girl’s best friend. As the Fall 2013 trends begin to emerge, so too do the must-have heels, boots and flats of the season. This round of fashion week has brought with it oodles of new shoe trends to look out for. From strappy suede booties to architectural high heels, the New York, London, Milan and soon-to-be Paris runways are filled with quirky designs that can certainly be the finishing touch on any outfit.

So far, many designers are reinventing old classics and updating them with modern details. Case in point: high-heeled loafers, seen at Mulberry, Rag & Bone and Moschino, which gave a new feminine twist to menswear’s most classic shoe by using fresh yellows, and unexpected patterns. Speaking of unexpected combinations, one of the most unusual footwear trends is the emerging sandal-boot. Open-toe booties are nothing new, but this time designers such as Prada have created a boot customized with cutouts around the sides and front of the shoe.

From Lady Gaga to Givenchy: 8 beauty picks for winter’s all-black makeup trend

Black makeup trend

It is always darkest before the dawn, so the proverb goes. By our calculations, the sun should be rising on planet fashion any day now: the Fall 2012 runways plunged us into a cavernous black hole of clothes worthy of Louise Brooks and Siouxsie Sioux, and haunting beauty looks that referenced Tim Burton’s films. That mood also infected the making of Lady Gaga’s fragrance, Fame. “I like black, especially what it has to do with fame, because it is a veil,” she says, tapping her knife-like ebony talons on the table at a hotel in New York. “It’s sort of like saying, ‘I don’t want you to see something.’” The R&D department struggled to create the noir-hued perfume that turns clear once airborne—an industry first. (Rumour has it one staff member was inspired when he spotted a bottle of black vodka behind the bar while out for a drink.) The request for an ominously coloured juice was music to the ears of its perfumer, Richard Herpin. It meant he didn’t have to exclude ingredients that can be visually unappealing when mixed together. “I could use anything I wanted,” he says. As fashion has taught us, black hides a multitude of sins.

Worst Dressed 2012: What this year’s top 10 celebrity fashion gaffes have taught us about how not to dress next year

Worst Dressed 2012

With 2013 so close we can nearly taste it, we’re taking some time to look back and reflect on 2012 and learn a little. Our year has been filled with designer switch-ups, Kate Middleton sightings and a whole lot of celebrity spotting. We’ve always been told we’re supposed to learn from our mistakes, but instead we’re ignoring our own and looking to the worst dressed of 2012—from celebrities on the red carpet to their day-to-day lives—for some fashion lessons.

These are (some) of our picks for the worst dressed of 2012, those who offer a learning experience from their fashion flops. While every look may not be a fashion disaster, we’ve learned it’s all about the timing and nature of the event that can take a look from stylish to just plain wrong (à la Kanye West at the 12-12-12 benefit). From Justin Bieber’s decision to wear overalls to a formal event to Angelina Jolie’s right leg showing us how not to pose, we’ve learned a lot over the year and plan to avoid these mistakes at all costs (even if we’ll never be walking a red carpet). Here are our nominees for worst dressed of 2012…

Andrej Pejic is getting a reality show

Comments

Photography by Moo

Finally, a reality show we’re actually excited for! Reps for Andrej Pejic, the world’s most famous androgynous, gender-bending model (and our February cover star), have finally confirmed the blonde stunner’s forthcoming reality show, which will trail Pejic for weeks as he performs normal model duties.

In an email to Fashionista, DNA Models (Pejic’s New York management) wrote: “It’s still in the early stages, but yes, there is a show being developed around Andrej,” confirming year-long rumours that were first sparked by a tweet from Pejic himself.

Also appearing in the show is Jadranka Savic, Pejic’s always-supportive mom, who told Australian media last year that Pejic was “the most beautiful girl I’ll ever see in a wedding dress” after he closed the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 haute couture show as a bride. “It was always that I wanted to be pretty, to look beautiful, as a girl would want to,” he told NY Magazine, adding that he’s always focused on simply being himself rather than playing into gender identity.

Groundbreaking gender-bending aside, we think Pejic will be incredible reality show fodder: this is the person who staged a fake pregnancy at an airport just to mess with reporters, after all.
